Chapter 216

Elena wasn’t stupid. She knew Massimo had only come to California to talk to other mafia men. She knew Massimo was testing these dons‘ and capos‘ loyalty to the Ferraros. After all, being so far away from the Mafia King’s home meant that it was much easier to forget his power and might–so Massimo needed to remind them of it all, subtly and politely.
But Elena didn’t appreciate being nothing more than the Don of All Dons‘ wife. She didn’t appreciate having to smile and say nothing as the conversations repeated and repeated as Massimo visited more and more mafia men. Elena knew Massimo was trying to be social, but he clearly had a social script and he followed it exactly with each encounter–which meant it was very easy for Elena to get bored.
Worst of all, Massimo kept insisting Elena go to all these meetings! While on past trips Massimo would give her free time, he did no such thing this time. Massimo stuck to his word—he really did stay with her for practically every minute of every day.
The weeks in California flew by. It was only when Elena had a sparse moment alone that she checked her personal phone’s calendar and realized how much time had passed.
“At least there’s only a few days left here,” Elena muttered to herself, trying to cheer herself up.
Luckily, Massimo was taking a shower so Elena had the hotel bedroom to herself. Elena smiled as she scrolled through her calendar app–though she didn’t hate Massimo, she did value her alone time. Elena wished she could’ve gotten her own hotel room, but they couldn’t risk some mafia member hearing that the Mafia King and Queen were sleeping in separate rooms–it would ruin Massimo’s image.
Only five more days of this and then Elena would be back in her own bedroom. And then, a week after that, Elena had her date with her mystery husband. Elena hoped she’d be over any jetlag by then–she wanted to put her best self forward when she met her husband.
Elena frowned. She had barely gotten to text her husband during this work trip. Though Elena wasn’t doing anything important, she couldn’t take out her phone and text someone during a mafia meeting!
Maybe that was why Elena was feeling more down than usual about this trip. When the mafia work got to be too much for her last time, Elena felt much better after she talked to her husband. Even if she couldn’t share the details of her problems, venting about them helped plenty.
Elena pulled up her husband’s number. But as she started to draft a text, she reconsidered. Should she be talking to her husband?
Elena did still want to get a divorce. She was only meeting up with him to get an explanation, not because she truly believed their relationship was fixable. So maybe Elena shouldn’t be texting him all that frequently.
Elena pulled up a different contact–the number to St. Camillus Hospital.
“Hello, I’m Dr Elena Vitale, and I’m calling about Matteo Vitale’s condition? Ah, so he’s still in the coma then… Yes, I understand—thank you…”
Massimo finished getting dressed and slowly opened the bathroom door. He started to greet Elena–he wanted to let her know she could take her nightly shower, if she wanted to–but something stopped him. Because as he looked at Elena, everything he was going to say disappeared from his mind.
