Elena could only stare at Massimo as she clutched the tossed dress it was a nice material but nothing flashy, Which only confused Elena more.
“I thought we finished all the mafia meetings for the day?” Elena asked.
Massimo nodded. “We did. This is for a mafia meeting.”
Massimo picked up the new sneakers from the hotel bed. He carefully began unitying them and loosening the laces before he handed the shoes directly to Elena.
Elena’s bafflement must have shown on her face because Massimo suddenly frowned.
“We’ve been in California for nearly a month,” he explained, “but we haven’t done anything beyond work. You’ve worked very hard, Elena–you deserve a small break. And since you shouldn’t go out alone, I thought I’d treat you to a night out in style.”
“That’s all very nice,” Elena began, “but-”
Massimo held up a hand. “Everything is already booked and paid for. So you can argue with me about this for the next five hours, or we can head out once you’re dressed–which will it be, Elena?”
It took no time at all for Elena to get ready. Massimo guided them through busy LA streets like it was was nothing–but instead of going further into the glowing city, they went further away.
Finally, they arrived at an old movie theater. Despite its obvious age, it was still beautiful–it was like looking at an old castle almost.
Massimo opened the little red door. “After you.”

Inside was a bunch of ancient red carpets that had seen better days along with chipped white stone on every other surface. But the smell of cooking popcorn and soft pretzels more easily overwhelmed Elena’s senses than any of the sights–save for the large banners declaring “Local Exhibition Night!”
Massimo silently followed Elena’s gaze. “It’s apparently a local tradition. They get a bunch of amateur and indie film makers to show off their movies for an entire week.”
“It sounds fun,” Elena slowly admitted, a smile starting to take over her face. “Do we have time to hit the concession stand?”
Massimo nodded. “They have a limited menu though.”
“I can work that,” Elena replied.
Though popcorn was only served in tiny brown bag and the only drinks available were alcoholic, Elena did not regret her purchases. And she and Massimo watched each movie, Elena also did not regret letting Massimo drag her here. Even if some of the films were too pretentious or just downright boring or nonsensical, it was nice to just unwind and do something silly like this.
But maybe that was just the third glass of wine making her sentimental. To think, that theater served red wine but not soda! Elena nearly giggled as she walked out of the theater.

Massimo smiled at her. “You should drink some water.”
Elena waved him off. “I’ll get some when we’re at the hotel. And how come you’re fine–you drank double what I did!”
Massimo chuckled. “I built up a resistance to pretty much every drug in existence–and alcohol is a drug.”
Elena squinted as she thought over her boss‘ words. Then she shook her head.
“That’s not how it works,” Elena insisted. “You’d still be feeling the effects of it. Maybe you just hide it better…”
That actually made Massimo laugh, low and deep. The sound brought a smile to Elena’s face.
The two walked back to their hotel. Walking should’ve been faster than getting a taxi or waiting for the bus, but the two were taking their time. The endless shops, advertisements, and other strange sights they passed easily stole away their attention.
