Chapter 218
“So you want the white picket fence dream,” Massimo stated.
“What’s wrong with that?” Elena asked defensively.
“Nothing.”
“No, tell me what alternative life you would want, Mister Man of Adventure,” Elena insisted. “Since the cozy life is too good for you, please, enlighten me to your ways.”
Massimo bit back a laugh. “Remote sounds good, but suburbs have too many rules.”
“So you want some private island to yourself in the middle of nowhere?” Elena asked.
“I’d settle for an already populated island, as long as it was someplace warm,” Massimo replied.
“Good to know you’re not a complete barbarian,” Elena shot back with a smirk. “But if you have nosy neighbors, what are you going to do without a picket fence?”
“I’ll build a red brick wall,” Massimo said confidently. “Then no one can see anything.”
“Even the dog?” Elena suddenly wailed.
“The dog?” Massimo asked back. “Since when is there a dog?”
“Since we first got the house,” Elena said without missing a beat. “We’ll need the extra bit of companionship without Luca or your subordinates around. And our dog deserves to look at the outside world.”
Massimo’s breath caught in his throat. He had no idea when this vivid daydream suddenly merged into a shared situation. It warmed his heart just thinking about it—a place for just Elena and himself.
But Massimo didn’t want to call attention to it. Besides, he really shouldn’t put much faith into its reality- Elena was just drunk and rambling on little ideas here and there. It probably meant nothing at all to her.
And yet, Massimo couldn’t let it go.
“I’ll settle for a pale brown fence,” Massimo conceded. “But only for our dog–what’s his name?”
“It needs to be something fitting for the breed we get,” Elena replied. “I’d want a nice, loyal, big dog. So maybe something like Dan or Steve–maybe Max?”
Massimo couldn’t hold back his laughter anymore.
“Aren’t you supposed to name a dog something cute and more pet–like–something like Sparky or Champ?” Massimo finally wheezed out. “The names you suggested belong to people, not pets!”
Elena pouted. “That’s the fun of it. And if you won’t at least hear my suggestions, then I don’t think you get to help name our dog.”
“That’s cold.”
“I don’t care. Max and I are very pleased with his name and that’s all that matters!”

The next morning, Elena and Massimo were back to the same routine of constant mafia meetings. But Elena had more patience and Massimo was more willing to improvise. In short, they were both in much better moods.
And when night fell, they went back to the same little movie theater and had a wonderful evening. Then they’d wander around and just chat until they got back to the hotel and got some very well earned rest.
The whole week passed by following that simple but fun routine. Then it was time to get ready to return back to
New York.
