“At once, sir.” With a small bow, Luca departed.

Elena furrowed her brow, “I assume you’re trying to secure connections and allies then?

Massimo nodded. He pulled up a few documents on his computers about the local mafia families—it wouldn’t hurt to study up on them before the meetings.

“What can I do to help?” Elena asked eagerly.

“Nothing,” Massimo shot back. “Besides, wouldn’t you rather check in on your half–brother?”

Massimo watched Elena’s expression shift. Of course the reappearance of Tyler had reminded Elena of her half- brother’s suffering. Massimo knew Elena wouldn’t want to be anywhere but her brother’s hospital room.

Whether she would admit that aloud though was a different story.

“I can give you a ride there,” Massimo offered.

Elena frowned. “I don’t want to pull you away from your work.”

“It’ll take Luca a bit to find out what families can meet when,” Massimo countered. “And the hospital isn’t that far away.”

“Alright, let’s go,” Elena said.

Elena felt a bit guilty about accepting Massimo’s offer, but she did need to see her half–brother. She felt she might go crazy if she didn’t visit him today.

Massimo smiled. “I’ll find a guard to stay with you at the hospital,” he said.

“That’s not necessary,” Elena replied. “It’s just a hospital, after all.”

Massimo frowned. “Elena, between your mysterious caller and Tyler popping up, you can’t go alone. You need to think about your safety.”

“I understand, but hospitals aren’t the place for big, muscular guards,” Elena said. “I’m afraid that would make the other patients and doctors nervous. And if they make a mistake out of fear… I’d never forgive myself.”

Massimo raised his hands on his desk and folded them together. He was clearly thinking through Elena’s

argument.

When had it started, Elena wondered idly, that she started to expect that Massimo would listen to her words and think through her ideas before stating his own? Though Elena might’ve been out of her depth when she first arrived as Massimo’s doctor, that had changed. It was now more like they were two experts, two partners, two friends who would take each other seriously in all matters.

“What if a maid meets you there?” Massimo asked. “They’re trained as guards, too, but a small woman shouldn’t scare anyone. That’s the best I can do on such short notice.”

Truthfully, Elena didn’t want anyone else with her when she visited her half–brother, but she recognized Massimo’s concerns. “That works for me,” Elena replied.

Massimo dropped off Elena at the hospital. A maid was already waiting in the hospital’s lobby. Elena felt odd having a maid follow her which wasn’t helped by the occasional stares sent her way by hospital visitors and staff all but she tried to ignore the feeling,

Instead, Elena focused on getting to her half–brother’s room. It was a path she had taken many times.

The sight that greeted her when she opened the door to that room was no different, Her half–brother’s medical charts were also exactly the same,

Matten was neither getting better or worse, It was like he was frozen in time.

Elena felt incredibly guilty,

Her feelings must’ve shown on her face, since the maid suddenly decided to talk.

“Oh, did you bring these flowers last time, ma’am? They’re wonderful–they help brighten up the place. Where did you find them?”

“Just at the grocery store,” Elena answered, “I felt bad coming empty handed.”

“Which grocery store? The one on Fifth or Sixth Street? Then again, they both feel practically identical to me sonic days.”

The maid went on and on like that, asking simple questions and steering the conversation into more pleasant topics. Elena went along with it–she honestly appreciated the woman’s distractions.

“Thank you for coming along,” Elena suddenly said.
