Chapter 227
Elena felt her blood run cold at the maid’s words. Of course, the other woman would think nothing of a husband visiting his wife but Elena was only pretending to be Massimo’s wife. And, even more importantly, Elena couldn’t recall a single time Massimo had “visited” her bedroom.
“Excuse me?” Elena asked, trying to not let her panic show. “What exactly do you mean by that?”
The maid, thankfully, didn’t look ashamed or rebuked. She just continued on in the same cherry tone. Elena supposed that was for the best–it meant that the maid didn’t think Elena’s question was all that weird.
“The don has dropped you off to your bedroom a few times now,” the maid explained. “A few times you’ve looked so exhausted that the don insisted on carrying you there himself–like when you two returned after that nasty business on the border. Or after you visit the hospital late some days.”
Elena relaxed. There were a few times she could recall returning home after visiting her half–brother and needing to be led back to her room.
But Elena didn’t think it happened that often. And as for the day they returned after Tyler killed a bunch of mafia men at the border, Elena couldn’t remember anything clearly after having coffee with Aria…
Honestly though, between her half–brother being in the hospital and all the drama of her relationship with her real husband, Elena’s new normal quickly became tired. She had too many things on her mind all the time. Plus, there was normal mafia work to add onto all of that chaos–Elena was surprised she was managing as well as she was.
“I’m telling you, ma’am,” the maid continued, completely unaware of Elena’s troubles, “the don has truly turned into a fine gentleman since you’ve been around. Everyone is saying so!”
Elena smiled. It was nice that Massimo was looking after her and respecting her boundaries. When she had first moved in and Massimo had messed with all her things, Elena had been worried–turns out that there was nothing to worry about.
The maid gossiped more with Elena about a lot of pointless things–which of the servants were getting romantic with each other, the little fights that happened between the estate’s chefs, and things like that. Elena did appreciate having the woman’s steady stream of words to distract her from the somber truth of why they both were there.
Elena decided to take another look at her half–brother’s chart. Perhaps there was something she could suggest –some treatment the other doctors had yet to try—that could help improve his condition.
As Elena got closer to Matteo’s bed though, she noticed his breathing suddenly quicken. Elena immediately went to his side.
“Matteo?” she called. “Are you alright?”
Elena reached to check his pulse. But, suddenly, Matteo’s hand gripped her own.
“Elena?” he asked groggily. He squinted and took a look around the room. “What…”
Elena knew her half–brother was likely struggling to form coherent thoughts and sentences–it was a common problem many coma patients had upon waking up. So she made sure to speak clearly and slowly.

“You were in a car accident,” Elena explained. “So Massimo had you sent to this hospital. How are you feeling?” Matteo tried to stretch and winced. “Like I got run over,” he replied. “Though I guess that sounds about right for what happened.”
Matteo was sporting a small grin. He had been in a coma for so long, yet his carefree, happy attitude hadn’t been squashed. Elena didn’t know if she should laugh or cry.
So she did a bit of both. “You can’t be serious for one second, can you?” Elena asked with a smile.
“Nope,” he replied simply.
“Ma’am,” the maid called.
Elena turned around. At some point, a bunch of doctors had all entered the room. Which made perfect sense- they no doubt wanted to run a bunch of tests on Matteo now that he was conscious.
“They need us to wait in the hall for a bit,” the maid explained.
Elena nodded. With a quick wave to her brother, she left the room.
