Elena turned in early that night. She didn’t see Massimo until breakfast the next morning–but he was oddly already awake.
And wearing the same outfit from yesterday.
“Did you even get any sleep?” Elena asked.
“I slept… some,” Massimo said stubbornly. “Anyways, I heard from the hospital that you received some good news yesterday.”
Elena smiled and passed Massimo some fresh fruit. “Yes, Matteo’s awake,” she replied.
“That must be a weight off your shoulders,” Massimo remarked.
“There’s still some complications we need to be on the lookout for,” Elena replied. “But it was good to see him talking, even if it was only for a moment.”
“Sounds like you should take the week off then,” Massimo said.
Elena stuttered. “Absolutely not. You clearly need my help if you’re pulling all–nighters again.”
“I did sleep for a few hours,” Massimo countered. “Besides, today is a fairly light day of work, so I’ll catch up on sleep when I return in the evening.”
“Then how about I just take the day off?” Elena countered.
Massimo shrugged and helped himself to some of the fresh fruit. “If that’s what you want,” he agreed.
“It is,” Elena replied. “Anyways, what ‘light work‘ has you gone for the whole day?”
“Just a quick trip to check some things out of state,” Massimo explained. “Honestly, Luca will have a rougher time since he’s driving.”
“Nap in the back seat then,” Elena advised.
“Understood, Doctor,” Massimo teased.
Since Elena had the day off, she texted her step–mother to see if she was free–they did have plans to have a little picnic in the park to celebrate Matteo’s recovery, after all.
“Of course I’m free,” her step–mother Alessia texted back. “Meet me at Central Park with some treats for brunch. It’ll be great!”
Elena grabbed the coffee Aria had gifted her and quickly brewed some. She put the fresh coffee in a thermos and packed it in a small bag along with some mugs and leftover pastries from breakfast. At the last moment, Elena decided to bring her medical go bag with, too–just in case anything came up on Massimo’s end.
To Elena’s great surprise, her step–mother was already at the park. She had picked out a quiet corner and set down a large blanket for them to sit on.
“Don’t just stand there, Elena,” her step–mother said with a grin. “Let’s have that mother–daughter picnic we talked so much about! Did you bring something hot to drink?”

“Yes, and some freshly baked pastries,” Elena replied. She sat down and poured them each a cup of coffee.
Alessia grabbed a cup and clinked it against Elena’s. “To a great day!” she said. “Now drink up while it’s hot.”
Elena sipped at her coffee. “So, what-”
“Elena,” her step–mother chided, “let’s enjoy breakfast first and then chat, alright? You don’t want to drink cold coffee, after all. So drink up first, dear!”
Elena held back a frown. She knew her step–mother could be difficult sometimes, but complaining about not drinking coffee fast enough was a new problem.
But Elena simply shrugged her shoulders and drank her coffee in silence. It wasn’t too hot, so, rather than deal with her step–mother’s complaints, Elena decided to just chug the whole thing.
Weirdly, Alessia hadn’t touched her own coffee at all. Instead, she was just picking at a croissant as she stared at Elena. That was… odd.
Or was it? Elena’s head began to feel fuzzy–it was hard to focus on anything. She reached for her medical bag.
“Oh dear,” her step–mother said. “Elena, is the sun bothering you? How about we continue the fun back at home -the Vitale estate?”
