It was obvious Sloane was talking about Massimo hiding the hacking details from Elena. Yet he felt his blood run cold as he thought of the bigger lie he was keeping secret–his double life as Elena’s simple mechanic husband.

The rest of the meal passed by relatively well. Elena was surprised that Massimo had no more arguments or objections for her mother. She supposed he was just letting her enjoy this moment with her.

“That was wonderful,” Sloane said as the plates were taken away. “There’s still so much I want to talk to you about though. Why don’t we continue catching up over at-”

“No,” Massimo cut in. “Unfortunately, we have an early morning tomorrow.”

Sloane frowned. “Then I’ll be extra conscious of the time.”

“Will you now,” Massimo said evenly.

“Of course,” Sloane replied, tone clipped. “Elena, why don’t we head to the park? Surely your husband can handle being away from you for another hour or two.”

“Elena really shouldn’t be anywhere without a guard,” Massimo shot back. “Especially at such a late hour.”

“It’s barely evening-”

“Well, you never know-”

Elena stood up suddenly from the table, drawing the two’s attention. She clapped her hands together with a false amount of cheer.

“Why don’t we have some dessert and tea before we do anything?” Elena suggested warmly. “Massimo, dear, could you help me grab them?”

Without waiting for a reply, she hooked her arm around her boss and dragged him into the kitchen.

“What the hell is going on?” Elena hissed. “I thought you were just checking that their stories made sense, but you’re being so combative for no reason!”

“Sorry I don’t immediately trust two strangers,” Massimo replied bitterly. “But I can’t just believe someone after a few hours of conversation!”

Elena bit back the urge to sigh. “So do you think they’re lying then?” she asked.

Massimo’s anger also deflated. “I don’t know,” he admitted. “But I can’t help noticing what they don’t say versus what they do say.”

“Like what?” Elena prodded.

“Sloane didn’t say who exactly her ‘old friends‘ were, or which one got your work number,” Massimo explained. I know it’s not the best kept secret or anything, but still. For all we know, Tyler could’ve given her that number.”

Elena frowned. “And what, she’s working with Tyler?” she asked. “That doesn’t make sense–my mom hates the

mafia.”

“She hated the mafia,” Massimo corrected. “Elena, you’re working on information that’s almost two decades old. Your mother could’ve changed her opinion by now–that’s enough time for a person to change everything about themselves.”

Though Massimo was speaking in the softest voice Elena had ever heard him use, his words still felt too sharp.

Elena closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Massimo was right–she needed to be rational and logical about this.

“Fine,” Elena agreed. “I won’t go anywhere with Sloane or Noah alone.”

The two returned to the dining room with refreshments. Elena graciously served everyone some sweets and a cup

of tea.

Massimo was just glad Elena didn’t seem crushed from their earlier conversation. It looked like she understood his concerns and caution for once.

“My husband is right, I’m afraid,” Elena stated as the light refreshments dwindled. “We have an early morning tomorrow, as well as work to finish up today. However, we’d love to meet up with you two later.”
