Chapter 263
Elena knew she was being a little foolish. She knew she was putting herself in unnecessary danger. But she also knew that as long as Tyler’s mystery woman was running around, more people were going to get hurt.
So Elena ran after her.
She bolted down the side street, trying to catch up. But the mystery woman was faster. Elena couldn’t close the distance between them–or get a better look at the woman beyond
“er red hair.
It was clear the woman noticed Elena following. She took a sharp turn, nearly losing Elena but the doctor wouldn’t be so easily tricked. But with each quick misdirect and true change in direction, she widened the gap between them.
It was clear the mystery woman knew this area better than Elena. Wit
she was gone.
another turn, this time into a busy street,
Elena stood on the street corner, still vainly trying to find a glimpse of that bright red hair. The only thing she succeeded in doing was catching her breath.
“What the fuck were you thinking?”
Elena spun around and came face to face with her very angry boss. Massimo still held his gun tightly at his side. Though he wasn’t breathing as heavy as Elena, there were a few drops of sweat gathered at his forehead.
“I lost her,” Elena mumbled, thoroughly disappointed in herself.
“That’s the best outcome you could’ve gotten,” Massimo snapped. “You have no weapon and no training–even if through some fucking miracle, you caught up to the bitch, what were you going to do?”
“I handled that one spy at the Albano’s party, didn’t I?” Elena shot back, suddenly angry. Though she had needed help, she had held her own okay. “I can tackle someone to the ground as well as anybody else.”
Massimo rolled his eyes. “Sure, let’s say that’s true–what if she had a gun? What were you going to do to handle that?”
When Elena hesitated, Massimo got closer. “If she had real combat training, rather than just being a scared server?
Massimo pressed. “What about if she was meeting up with backup–say a half dozen armed men or so?”

Massimo laid his hands on Elena’s shoulders, forcing her to look in his intense eyes. There was a storm raging within them—anger refined and weaponized.
“You need to think ahead before you wind up dead,” Massimo commanded.
At this close, Elena could hear the sincerity and power of his voice. But she could also smell a strong scent of
copper.
She traced it back to Massimo’s left arm. There was a decent hole in his suit jacket’s arm and a dark stain forming
around it.
“You’re bleeding,” Elena observed.
Massimo didn’t even blink. “Yeah, that shit happens when you try to run from a sharpshooter. It’s more surprising you didn’t get shot.”
Elena paled at the thought. Massimo was highly trained, yet he didn’t come out of that shoot out uninjured. She should’ve been shot through a dozen times over–the fact that hadn’t was odd.

“Unless,” Elena said, thinking aloud. “…unless the sharpshooter wasn’t alming for me.”
Massimo’s expression immediately darkened. His grip tightened for a moment before Massimo released Elena
“This is Tyler’s doing,” Massimo spat out. “For all the harm he’s done to you, the bastard is awfully possessive. He’d sooner kill his subordinates than let them hurt you–he needs to do that shit himself.”
Elena felt sick. She knew from the second she saw the red haired woman that Tyler was probably involved, but to hear the man’s motives stated so plainly… She felt uneasy.
“Let’s focus on your arm for now,” Elena said, redirecting the conversation. “I have my medical bag in the car–is it safe to go back there?”
“Only the sniper was still alive when I chased after you. If he was smart, he would’ve left not long after. We should be fine–but stay close.”
Massimo was pissed. He tried his best to calm down as Elena administered first aid, but he couldn’t. How the fuck had they gotten ambushed?
No one knew Massimo and Elena were heading to Massachusetts–it was a spur of the moment decision made this morning. So Tyler had somehow managed to plan and orchestrate this whole attack on the fly?
