Chapter 265

Massimo spared a glance at Elena before striding up to the front door. Elena shot her mother a sympathetic smile. To her relief, Sloane followed as Elena approached the door.

“I’ll be in my office if you need me,” Massimo stated simply. Without another word, he walked off.

It was just Elena and her mother now.

Elena couldn’t help but notice how tense her mother seemed. Maybe she wasn’t a fan of how opulent the estate was? It certainly unnerved Elena when she first had visited.

“Why don’t we have a walk in the green house?” Elena suggested.

“That’s fine by me,” Sloane said softly.

Elena had hoped the beautiful flowers and shrubs would help lift the awkward tension. It was hard to be uneasy. around such gorgeous scenery.

But still, Sloane managed to remain less than upbeat. Sure, she smiled here and there, but only for a second at a time. It was clear Sloane was uncomfortable.

“Do you have a favorite plant?” Elena asked. “The lilies over here are my favorite.”

“They are nice,” Sloane said solemnly. “Sorry, it’s a bit difficult to focus when so many pests are about.”

“Pests?” Elena repeated. With the cold weather, Elena hadn’t spotted so much as a fly about. Where was Sloane seeing bugs?

“Yes,” Sloane confirmed. “I’m not a fan of being spied on, you see.”

Sloane gestured her head ever so slightly to the left. Elena followed the motion and saw a maid pruning one of the garden beds. Further back, a few servants were putting together a table for Elena and Sloane to have tea at.

There were a few male servants waiting along the wall, likely on guard. Elena never bothered them to ask–they looked too serious. Outside the hallway door, Elena could hear a few maids starting to sweep and dust.

“I never relaxed back at your father’s estate for that reason,” Sloane continued. “Too many eyes and ears waiting to sell out any secrets they came across.”

“Massimo doesn’t employ anyone like that here,” Elena replied, trying to sound reassuring.

Sloane’s expression didn’t change. “That doesn’t matter to me,” she said. “These spies are loyal to the master of the house only–no one else.”

Elena didn’t know what to say, so she kept walking at her mother’s side. She knew logically that the Ferraro estate’s servants would obviously be loyal to Massimo above anyone else. But at some point, that had stopped feeling like a threat.

Elena had gotten used to their constant presence. She didn’t worry about what they might overhear or accidentally see. She didn’t blink when she saw one of them carry knives or a gun and move through the hallway.

It would be so easy for them to kill her. If Elena ever threatened Massimo, she had no doubt that these servants could tell him some of her most damning secrets or kidnap her or even torture her.

Elena knew Massimo trusted her–he knew that she wasn’t a threat but an ally. Yet until her mother had pointed it out, Elena had forgotten how dangerous living in the Mafia King’s house could be. Elena had been blinded too how much she had grown to trust Massimo.

She wished a little bit that her mother hadn’t said anything on the subject at all.

Elena tried to keep the topics light as she had tea with her mother, Sloane at least seemed content to hear about Elena’s journey through medical school, how she had gotten along with her best friend Arla, and some of Elena’s latest hobbies.

“You like movies now?” Sloane questioned. “You used to hate them as a kid. I always pictured you as one of those diehard readers who hated the film industry.”

Elena laughed. “I guess I’ve seen some great ones that changed my mind. Which reminds me, have you heard of-

Elena’s phone buzzed, cutting her off. She checked the caller ID. It was Joshua.

“Sorry,” Elena apologized. “I should take this–it could be really important.”

After Sloane flashed a thumbs up, Elena took a few steps away from her mother and answered the call.

“Hello?”

“Elena,” Joshua greeted, “thank goodness you answered. Listen, I don’t have a lot of time before my next case meeting, but I wanted to tell you the second I knew.”

“Thanks,” Elena said, more than a little confused, “but what exactly did you learn?”

“There’s rumors that a federal case is being brought against Massimo.”
