Chapter 266
“Wait, no,” Elena immediately protested. “You already brought a case against Massimo, and he was found innocent. And I thought you promised that you were done with attacking him-”
“Elena, please,” Joshua interjected softly. “This isn’t the state of New York or the local cops going after him. This is the feds–the FBI–which means that they’ve got a bunch of taxpayer money, seasoned lawyers, and old school cops on this.”
“Does that include you or your friends?” Elena asked.
“No,” Joshua replied. “We have to turn over all evidence on him, but we won’t be told a single thing about this investigation.”
Which meant Joshua wouldn’t be able to send over any information. Elena realized just how much danger Massimo could be in.
“But why now?” Elena insisted. “I mean, why not wait and see if something big happens? Isn’t that what you normally do when you’re trying to arrest mafia men?”
Joshua sighed. “I don’t have all the answers, Elena. All I have is some rumors around the office.”
“That’s better than nothing. What are the rumors?”
“That there was an anonymous tip… My personal theory is that Tyler might try to pin some of his more violent crimes on Massimo–but that’s just my gut talking,” Joshua said slowly. “I need to go, but be careful, okay?”
Elena had to take a moment to calm herself before she returned to her mother. She apparently didn’t do a good job -her mother immediately frowned.
“What’s wrong?” Sloane asked.
And though Elena knew Massimo didn’t exactly trust Sloane, she found herself telling her mother everything. Nothing too incriminating or detailed–just that a lawyer friend let her know that Massimo might be investigated
soon.
“And this lawyer friend–he’s a man?” Sloane asked.
Elena furrowed her brow. After that whole explanation, that was her concern?
“Yeah,” Elena stated. “He’s an old friend from middle school. He’s helped us out a few times now.”
“But you’re allowed to talk to him? Alone?” Sloane asked again.
“Yes, why wouldn’t I be?”
“Mafia men can just… get jealous easily,” Sloane explained slowly. “I’m surprised you’re allowed to have male friends.”
“Joshua is both mine and Massimo’s friend,” Elena said, feeling a little ridiculous. “So there’s not anything for Massimo to get jealous over.”
Sloane raised an eyebrow at that.
“What?” Elena insisted.
Sloane set down her tea cup. “Honey, Joshua clearly has a crush on you. I’m honestly surprised he hasn’t tried to use his cop connections to get you out of the mafia life.”

“He… actually kind of did?” Elena confessed hesitantly. “But the price of that was turning on Massimo and selling out his secrets.”
“So you didn’t want out of the mafia life then?” Sloane asked.
Elena felt her face heat up. Something about the question made her defensive.
“Not at that price,” Elena bit back. “I’d never be that disloyal.”
Too late, Elena realized she chose her words poorly. Sloane’s face fell at the word ‘disloyal‘–a word that was thrown at her constantly when she was still a Vitale. The easiest insult for a mafia woman deemed a failure was to claim she was disloyal.
“Mom, I’m sorry. I didn’t-”
Sloane waved her hand, hiding behind a false smile. “It’s fine. Now, what were you saying about movies?”
