The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife novel Chapter 267

Chapter 267

Elena looked at the wig, trying not to panic. She took deep breath and focused.

Everyone described Tyler’s mystery woman as having red hair and green eyes. Even if Sloane owned a bunch of wigs, there was no reason to assume she also wore colored contacts. Elena needed to be rational and not jump to conclusions.

As Elena focused, she noticed this red wig might’ve been the correct shadenear identical to what she saw this afternoonbut it wasn’t curly. Several people had claimed the mystery woman had curly hairElena had even caught a brief glimpse of the tight curls herself. The red wig on this shelf, meanwhile, was short and perfectly straight.

Elena scanned the rest of the shelves to be sure though. She even opened a few drawers to check for colored contacts, but she didn’t find any.

Elena let out a deep breath. Her mother wasn’t Tyler’s mystery woman and secret advisor.

Of course, Elena already knew that. Even if Sloane was an expert at disguises, she wouldn’t be able to hide her age. If someone saw her with Tyler, they’d notice that she was much older than him. The fact no witnesses had mentioned this meant that the mystery woman had to be around Tyler’s own age, give or take a few years.

And Elena doubted her mother could so easily outrun her. Or that Sloane could get to the Ferraro estate so much faster than Massimo.

Thank goodness,Elena whispered to herself.

But just as Elena was about to relax, the door to the walkin closet opened.

Sloane stood in the doorway, looking at all the opened drawers and Elena’s sheepish expression.

This isn’t the kitchen,Sloane remarked dryly.

I got lost,Elena explained.

So you started snooping through my thing instead of turning around?Sloane shot back.

Then, suddenly, Sloane’s expression changed. She looked less defensive and more tired. I suppose I owe you an explanationlet me get you that coffee first.

Elena did her best to wait patiently as her mother made coffee. She wasn’t thirsty, but it seemed like the action soothed her mother’s nerves. Sloane looked more relaxed as she set down the two mugs, clutching one of them tightly.

Or maybe she just seemed more resigned.

The mafia still terrifies me,Sloane said slowly. I remember all the things your father didand that everyone he worked with did, too. The things I’ve heardthe things I’ve seenaren’t things that ever really go away.

Elena thought back to her first shoot out with Massimo. Or the time at the border. Or the ambush just a few hours

ago.

Elena didn’t think she’d ever forget those moments. The stench of blood, the full body fear, or the deafening screams of the injured and dying.

So, sometimes,Sloane continued, when I’m traveling, I like to change up my lookjust temporarily. You never know how deep some mafia family connections go. And since I was returning to New York, I wanted to have

options.

I thought you said you had friends here?Elena asked. Wouldn’t you want to touch base with them?

Sloane shook her head firmly. Not if it meant word would get to the Vitales. The last thing I want, Elena, is to be spotted by your father.

Elena could understand Sloane’s sentiment. Elena had also gone to great lengths to cut ties with her family. Why would anyone want to put themselves back into the situation they ran away from?

Besides, it was clear Sloane was terrified of Capo Vitale.
