“And you said yes?” Sloane asked. “When Massimo asked you to marry him, you agreed?”

Elena didn’t like how surprised Sloane seemed. It was clear her mother didn’t think highly of Massimo–or really, any decision Elena made when it came to the mafia.

“He’s not as bad as you may think,” Elena defended.

“I remember being told the same thing about your father,” Sloane replied. “Heck, I even repeated it a few times myself.”

Elena frowned. “That’s different. I’ve never been hurt by Massimo-”

“But he hurts other people,” Sloane insisted. “And that, at the very least, must have scared you, right?”

Elena couldn’t protest that. So she switched topics.

“I don’t plan to stay with him forever,” Elena admitted. “I’m just saving up enough money so that I can leave the mafia life for good–disappear completely.”

Sloane nodded at this, clearly pleased. “And you said the Vitales are now working more closely with the Morellos?”

“Yes, though that’s more Dad and Alessia–his new wife. Matteo is trying to break away from them—he wants to do it on his own though,” Elena summarized. “I’m not sure what they’re planning though.”

“It is odd,” Sloane remarked. “Your father has lost a good amount of money and manpower since I’ve been gone. What could the Morello family stand to gain by using them?”

“I don’t know,” Elena admitted. She hated how powerless she was when it came to her father and Alessia–and especially Tyler.

Sloane gripped Elena’s hand comfortingly. “Just don’t forget why you’re here,” Sloane said reassuringly. “I don’t want you getting stuck in the crossfire or Tyler Morello and Massimo Ferraro.”

Her mother flashed a small smile at Elena. And despite its tiny size, it thoroughly warmed Elena’s heart.

“I’ll be careful,” Elena replied.

“Good,” Sloane said. “I just got my daughter back. I don’t want to lose her.”

Elena was surprised to find Massimo in the dining room, enjoying dinner.

“How was your time with your mother?” Massimo asked.

“Alright,” Elena replied. “Though I got an interesting call from Joshua…”

Elena took a seat across from Massimo as she caught him up on all she had learned. Oddly, Massimo didn’t seem that concerned. He barely paused a second before continuing with his meal–like Elena had just remarked about the weather or something equally unimportant.

“Wouldn’t a federal investigation be bad?” Elena asked. “You haven’t ever dealt with one before, have you?”

“No,” Massimo confirmed, “I haven’t. But unfortunately, we have to wait for the feds to make the first move. Luckily, they’re normally slow as snails, so I don’t see a point in focusing on them now.”

Elena nodded. But something else was bothering her..

“I’m surprised you’re not mad I left the estate with my mother,” Elena said slowly.

Elena tried not to frown. Until today, she wouldn’t be annoyed that a servant had ratted her out–it would’ve been expected. But her mother’s insults about “pests” and “spies” still stuck with her.

“So you’re okay with me spending time with her then?” Elena pressed.
