Despite Elena's solemn declaration, she soon realized there wasn't much room at the safe house. More importantly, both Gavino and his wife were staying at the simple storefront with a small apartment hidden at its back. Which meant that Elena needed to pretend to be the Mafia Queen here, too!

Luckily, after greeting the couple, Emi immediately went back to cooking some kind of soup. And, to Elena's surprise, Massimo led Gavino to the couch on the opposite side of the living room—granted, that only gave her a few feet of space, but the gesture was, begrudgingly, appreciated. Elena sat down at the tiny, rickety table on the other side of the room and tried not to sigh.

She thought back on Massimo's explanation. It wasn't well told and she still had plenty of questions. But it's not like she could ask any of them now—she needed to pretend to be Massimo's husband and the perfect Mafia Queen!

Though if Massimo had been telling the truth, that meant Elena was always the Mafia Queen. She hadn't been playing pretend at all. She really was the wife of the Mafia King and therefore the rightful Mafia Queen.

The thought unsettled Elena. The idea that the entire time she had been lying and doing her best to perform such important duties Elena had actually just been fulfilling her proper role made her confused. But most of all, Elena felt a sudden burst of rage fill her body.

How many times had Massimo lorded his position of Mafia King over her to get his way? How many times had he insisted that he, as the Don of All Dons, knew better than some simple doctor? How many times had he simply reminded her that he was his boss, so she should fall in line?

And this whole time, they were apparently equals! The Mafia King was supposed to share his responsibilities with his Queen and allow her to voice her opinions and share his burdens. That's part of the reason why so many mafia members had been unsettled by Massimo's apparent disinterest in settling down—the mafia world was too complicated to be managed by one man alone.

It needed a family to guide it. A man and woman, husband and wife, working together to see the mafia world into an age of prosperity and peace.

And instead, Massimo had just been selfish. Elena was supposed to be working with him as a equal—this entire time!—and instead, he had stubbornly kept control over almost everything.

Elena let out a huff. This night was proving to be very frustrating.
