"You know what," Massimo said into his cell phone, forcing his tone to stay casual. "You should clean up your place before you go anywhere."
"I suppose I could be more thorough," Luca replied. "I don't like how much dust gets caught on the window's curtains."
"Better to take care of that before allergy season," Massimo said. "I'll see if they have your prescription at the pharmacy."
"Thanks," Luca said. Despite the fact Massimo knew they were speaking in code, it was still odd to hear his second-in-command speak so casually. "I'll see you later."
Massimo quickly grabbed his car keys. Luca would obviously do his best to dispose of any bodies still on sight, but he'd need to act quickly and then send all his subordinates out to different locations—hopefully, that would confuse anyone trying to tail him.
But there was only so much they could talk about in code. Massimo needed to hear everything from Luca in person—at a different location, one that the Ferraros didn't publicly own. Then they could figure out how much the FBI knew.
Less than an hour after Massimo left the estate, Elena walked onto the property. She wasn't sure she was making the right decision, but she knew that if she didn't act now she would lose her nerve.
But Elena was surprised to see how quiet the house was. And, more curiously, Massimo wasn't in his office.
Elena caught the attention of one of the maids. "Do you know where Massimo is?"
"He went out to meet up with his second-in-command," she replied with a quick bow.
"Do you know where that is?" Elena pressed. "I need to talk with him."
"The don didn't say," the maid replied. "Nor did he let us know when he would be returning."
Elena frowned but thanked the woman anyway.
"Shall I take a message?" the maid offered.
But Elena shook her head. She had the man's phone number already—if she wanted to contact him, she could do that herself. But Elena had wanted to talk to Massimo in person.
