"How are things going with you?" Elena asked.
"I'm fine, but more importantly, are you?" Aria immediately texted back. "The last thing I heard was that whole disaster with Massimo and then you went silent for days! Did he kidnap you or something?"
"Sorry, I forgot to keep you updated with everything going on," Elena apologized. "I'm fine, I promise."
"Are you?" Aria pressed. "Like, no offense, girl, but that's the Mafia King who screwed you over. And you're living in his house—I'm more than a little scared for you."
Elena was touched by Aria's concern. Even though they hadn't seen each other in a while, it was clear their friendship hadn't suffered—it was still just as strong as it was when they were roommates.
"Don't be. I broke up with him and left," Elena explained. "I'm somewhere safe—I'm not even in New York anymore."
"For real?" Aria asked. "Where are you staying?"
Elena was about to reply when her work phone unexpectedly buzzed. Her heart beat suddenly quickened.
Elena set down her personal phone and took a few deep breaths. Whoever was trying to contact her from the mafia couldn't hurt her through a text message—that's at least what she mentally repeated until it felt true. Then, before she could lose her courage, Elena picked up her work phone and opened the message.
Out of all her mafia contacts, Elena hadn't expected to see Lucilla Abano's name pop up on her phone screen.
"Just checking in," Lucilla had texted. "You've missed a few Women's Only tea parties so I haven't had anyone as fun to chat with at those. I figure you're busy with something important, but do you think we could hang out any time soon?"
Elena... also hadn't expected to receive that kind of message either. Sure, she was friends with Lucilla and they hung out often. This request on its own shouldn't be odd.
