Chapter 40

Massimo hated how much time and effort was spent to maintain relationships. It was just another reason to add to the ever–growing list of why never bothered to take up a lover.
But now that he had met his wife in person, Aria was determined to spend more time together. It was like Massimo had taken up a second job. And while being in charge of the mafia was demanding, Massimo at least knew what he was doing.
Massimo knew how to be the Mafia King, but he didn’t have the first clue on how to be a good husband.
“Massimo, let’s see this play!” Aria exclaimed as she dragged him over to an old theater.
It was the sort of brick building that blended into the scenery, yet Aria had spotted it instantly. It was modest and unassuming–Massimo wondered how long ago it had been built. It surely couldn’t be up to code.
It was the complete opposite of the French cafe they had their lunch at. While that venue screamed luxury in its minimalism, this theater screamed of dust and potential mold.
Trying to understand his wife was simply confusing. So Massimo merely let himself get dragged along.
He paid for two seats to the no doubt amateur production of MacBeth. There was no dedicated usher to guide them to their seats, but there were so few seats that they didn’t need the help to find their spots.
As they waited for the play to start, Massimo risked small talk.
“Did you ever perform?” he asked slowly. That was a reasonable question, wasn’t it?
By the way Aria wrinkled her nose, it wasn’t. “No,” she said simply. “I had to look after my cousins, so I didn’t have much time for extracurricular stuff, y’know?”
Massimo nodded. He also spent much of his time taking care of mafia families–ordinary people must have similar, if smaller and less deadly, duties.
“So,” he stumbled, “do you know anyone in this production?”
Massimo still couldn’t figure out why Aria was so excited to see what would surely be a bad performance. If the theater group could only rent out this terrible stage, they likely didn’t have any beautiful costumes or complicated props or set pieces. And if they were struggling this much, the group likely didn’t have any good actors either.
“No,” she repeated. “This is just a fun spot.”
The sparse lights in the room went out, and Massimo decided to let this topic die. He should probably pay attention to the show, even if it was terrible.
But Massimo couldn’t pay attention. Why was his wife so strange?
She said she only came to the city during college, and she spent so much time studying that she never rarely did any exploring. Her work as a medical professional would no doubt keep her busy. Yet here Aria was, knowing obscure locations.
She switched between suggesting high–end activities like golf and horse–back riding to recommending dates at craft stores or low quality theaters. Was Aria really fine with just about anything?
Despite himself, Massimo thought about Elena. “Maybe she’s feeling pressured to change and meet the expectations of being a Mafia Queen,” Elena had told him.
Aria had no idea about Massimo being the Mafia King, the Don of All Dons. Massimo had been careful to never let that detail slip. So she couldn’t feel pressured to meet the expectations of a role she didn’t know existed.

But maybe Elena was partially right. She was a lot more in tune with others than Massimo was, after all.
So maybe Aria felt pressured to meet Massimo’s own expectations. Which put Massimo in an awkward position- he had no idea what his expectations for his wife were.
Massimo thought deeply on the topic. He supposed he would want someone reliable and earnest. Someone capable in at least their area of expertise–though he wouldn’t mind if he had to step in occasionally and help.
