Chapter 46
Massimo was unimpressed by his dinner date. Really, if he was being honest, he had been bored by a lot of his
more recent dates.
If he hadn’t ran into Elena, he likely wouldn’t have smiled at all on this date. Even if Elena had confirmed that Joshua Millers, the notorious prosecutor, was her husband,
Massimo meant to pay attention to Aria–she was talking about her day? Or maybe some old family story? But his brain kept focusing on Elena.
Did she also go on dinner dates with her husband often? What types of places did he take her to?
Was Elena as miserable on her date tonight as Massimo was?
Massimo let out a breath he hadn’t realized he had been holding. He shouldn’t be thinking about Elena. They’re both married–a relationship would never work between them.
And besides, any other man would kill to be with someone like Aria. She had Hollywood level looks. The woman sat in front of him, smiling at him–she was as objectively attractive and eye–catching as they came.
And yet, Massimo couldn’t stop thinking about Elena.
More plain, more willing to fade into the background–yet that only made Massimo stare more. Comparing Elena to Aria made his doctor look unpolished, less graceful, and more homely.
Ask anyone, and it was clear who they would pick time and time again: Aria. It was an easy choice. It should be an easy choice.
So why was Massimo wishing he was having dinner with Elena instead?
“You know you can just tell me to shut up, right?”
Massimo snapped to attention. He tried to stammer out an apology, but it died when he saw Aria’s pitying expression.
Aria set down her silverware with a sad smile. “I have dated men before, Massimo. And while you’re nothing like the usual duds I deal with, I think you do have at least one thing in common.”
Massimo wanted to protest–the thought that anyone as ordinary as his wife could know anyone even remotely like himself was simply ridiculous. But he found himself mesmerized by the full focus of her gaze.
Aria lifted a single finger and glided it across the rim of her wine glass. “You only want what you can’t have,” Aria revealed.
If Massimo had felt embarrassed before by his behavior, he felt downright guilty now. Apparently even Aria had noticed her husband’s focus on Elena,
“I had no idea Elena would be here tonight,” Massimo said. Even his usual monotone voice sounded hollow to his
own ears.
“I know,” Aria said. Her expression suddenly brightened, but it struck Massimo as incredibly fake. “The next time will be planned, promise. I’ll check when Elena is free and schedule that double date.”
She winked playfully. Massimo couldn’t find it within himself to return the light energy.
That sort of thing only came easily with Elena.
Massimo took another breath–he had to stop thinking about Elena as anything other than his doctor.
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Massimo asked.

“Totally!” Aria enthused with a grin. Maybe it wasn’t fake. Maybe Massimo had just imagined it was–to make himself feel better about ignoring his wife, probably.
