To her surprise, Joshua nodded along. “So you made up a generic sounding name so Massimo wouldn’t think you were lying. A name that just so happens to match mine–clever.”

“You’re not mad?” Elena asked.

“No, why would I be?” Joshua asked in turn. “Fate has a funny way of bringing people together. It’s crazy that the name you made up was mine though.”

“Yeah,” Elena agreed. There was no way she was telling Joshua she used to have a crush on him and that’s why she very specifically remembered his name! This situation was already too embarrassing.

“So how long have you been with this new mystery husband?”

Elena hesitated. “About two to three months.”

“And you still haven’t met in person yet?” Joshua looked skeptical. “That’s not great, Elena. You need to make sure this guy is safe to be around–not to mention someone you really could love.”

“I like him,” Elena confessed. “He’s just gone quiet for the past few weeks, so we can’t really arrange a meet up.‘

Joshua frowned. “That’s not great.”

Elena could tell from his tone he wanted to say something meaner. “It’s not,” Elena agreed, “so thanks for helping me out of that bit of trouble.”

“There is a simpler way to solve your problems though,” Joshua stated. “Divorce the guy who’s never there for you. You deserve an uncomplicated love life and a partner who will actually love you openly.”

Elena didn’t want to reveal how much she had considered that very option. “It’s not like I have a lot of suitors,” she joked.

“I find that hard to believe–all the guys in middle school couldn’t get enough of you.”

“Quit joking around.”

“I’m not,” Joshua said seriously. “All the boys were convinced seeing you with that pink ribbon in your hair was good luck. There was a rumor that whoever became your boyfriend would get into their top college.”

Elena shyly played with her hair. Joshua was looking at her with too much earnest fondness for her to handle.

“You seem to have managed just fine without any of that,” Elena said.

“It wasn’t for lack of trying,” Joshua said, voice just barely bove a whisper.

Elena did remember Joshua would often invite her out to school sport games or to hang out at the local stores. She had thought he was just being his friendly self.

But looking at Joshua now, she knew that was wrong. Elena could know recognize that the blush in his cheeks or stammering sentences hadn’t been because he had just finished basketball practice or a game with his friends.

Joshua had been in love with her back then. And if Elena had lived with different parents, she might have actually realized that back in school–she probably would have date him.

If all that had happened, maybe Elena’s love life now would be blissfully simple.

But Elena’s entire life was far from simple. And while her mystery husband only had Mr. Fabio’s good word and a handful of text messages keeping him in Elena’s good favor the same couldn’t be said of Joshua.
