Chapter 48
Elena waited anxiously back at her apartment to return home. She knew Aria would have questions, and Elena wanted to get them over and done with as soon as possible,
Elena sighed. She had really done her best to keep her civilian and mafia lives completely separate. Yet, somehow, her best friend had ended up married to Don Ferraro!
Joshua was right about one thing: fate sure was funny sometimes.
Elena decided to keep her mind off things by texting her husband. She went into her room and renewed her search for her phone.
She easily found it underneath her nightstand. Weird, Elena could’ve sworn she had never dropped it there–and that she had already checked that spot when her phone had first gone missing.
Elena shrugged. Whatever, so long as she had her phone back.
And despite not checking her messages for almost an entire day, Elena still had no new texts. Maybe she really should prepare for a divorce.
But no, she had meant what she told Joshua–she wouldn’t just divorce her husband out of nowhere.
“I hope you’re having a great night,” Elena texted. “I have a funny story to tell you when you’re free–my boss is apparently dating my roommate. Small world, huh?”
Elena immediately put down the phone. She didn’t need to be reminded her husband wouldn’t text back.
Elena’s other phone–her mafia phone–buzzed. She had new messages from her boss about some work assignments for the upcoming week.
“Aren’t you still on your date? You shouldn’t be doing work right now.”
“That isn’t any of your business,” Massimo immediately replied.
“Enjoy your night with your wife,” Elena insisted.
“If you must know, we ended our date over two hours ago.
Elena wrinkled her brow at that. Why wasn’t Aria back yet?
“Do I have your permission to continue doing work then?” Massimo texted.
“I’ll allow it,” Elena texted back.
If only her husband texted her like this, Elena thought as Massimo continued telling her about new security measures he was planning–and the medical work she would need to do on top of all that. It wasn’t the same as with her husband, but talking to Massimo like this did brighten up her day.
It was still another hour until Aria arrived back home.
“You’re still up, Elena?” Aria said. Her eyes were wide with surprise. “I thought you would be in bed by now.”
“I am regretting staying up so late,” Elena confessed. She got up from the couch and stretched. “I’m surprised you’re back so late–Massimo said you finished up your da hours ago.”
Aria raised an eyebrow. “You call your boss by his first nan? That’s bold of you, Elena.”
“Is it?” Elena asked, suddenly self–conscious. “We don’t have any kind of relationship outside work. And if you’re worried about us being close-”

“I’m not.” Aria laughed. “You are the last woman I’d peg as a homewrecker,” she teased.
Elena sighed. “But anyways, why are you out so late?”
“I’m not usually back before midnight most days–come on, El, you know that!”
Elena did know that. But if Aria was out late, it was always only for one reason.
“So,” Elena started hesitantly. “Were you out with a different guy on another date?”
Elena didn’t know how she felt about Aria two–timing her boss. She should probably stand by her friend, but Elena couldn’t help feeling bad about Massimo. He was closed off enough already–he didn’t need to get betrayed by his wife like that.
Aria waved her hand dismissively. “Even I’m not so thirsty to do a back–to–back sesh like that. Especially not when I have a tall glass of muscle like that as a main course!” Aria said with a sexy wink.
Despite the crudeness of the statement, Elena smiled–Massimo’s heart was safe.
“How did you end up getting married to someone like Massimo?” Elena asked.
It just kept striking Elena as more and more impossible–especially because Massimo was adamant Aria didn’t know about his criminal connections.
Aria again waved her hand dismissively as she walked off to the kitchen. “I think we met online and just hit it off.”
Elena followed after her. “That’s it?”
Aria grabbed a bottle of water. “Yeah, I mean I’m better in person but the camera still photographs the ladies well, “Aria said as she cupped her breasts.
