“Aria,” Elena chided, “you can’t just do that!” Her face began heating up at the second hand embarrassment.
“Don’t be so middle school about it,” Aria chided back, taking a sip of water. “We’re all adults, and we have adult needs, y’know?”
Elena shook her head. “Still, you don’t have to be so vulgar bout it.”
Aria’s eyes glinted teasingly. “Oh, if you want something vulgar, I can talk about the first time I saw Massimo naked. There’s a reason he’s called Mass, and it’s because he’s massive down there-”
Elena placed her hands over her ears. “I’ll take it back! I don’t need to know how you two ended up together, promise!”
Aria laughed. “Alright, alright. I’m sorry, I didn’t think you were this much of a prude.”
“Liar,” Elena said good–naturedly. “You’re the worst.”
“And you love me for it!” Aria replied with a grin.
“Oh,” Aria said suddenly, “do you have your work schedule yet?”
“Yeah, why?” Elena asked.
“For the double date planning. Duh.”
Elena’s blood ran cold. If she went on a double date with Aria and Massimo, she would need to see Joshua again. Which meant Joshua would try to get Massimo to admit crimes so he could throw him in jail.
It also meant Elena would need to be firm in her previous declarations to Joshua. She knew she would never betray Massimo and testify against him. But Elena was less sure she didn’t want a divorce from her mystery husband— especially because he had been ignoring for so many weeks.
As Elena remained silent, Aria’s face fell. “Did Massimo not actually send you a work schedule yet? I swear, he gets so spacey sometimes–how did you end up with a guy like that?”
“He’s really not so bad,” Elena instantly defended. “Though he can be a bit old fashioned sometimes-”
“You mean sexist?”
“He changed his opinion about female doctors pretty quickly once I proved him wrong,” Elena continued. “The other male doctors at St. Camillus took days–Massimo only took five minutes.”
Aria hummed. “Okay, just make sure he’s compensating you well. I know that hospital was treating you pretty well, so if Massimo ever tries to short–change you, let me know, okay?”
Elena smiled. Aria really was always looking out for her. “I promise.”
Aria smiled back and then clapped her hands. “Okay then. I’m thinking Friday night for the double date at Bouna Notte–it’s this cute little fancy Italian place. Great drinks, rust me.”
“I don’t know,” Elena hesitated. How could she get out of this? “I don’t think I own anything nice enough for a place like that.”
“Yeah, your pink dress won’t cut it,” Aria agreed. “Luckily, your best friend has a whole wardrobe of dresses you can borrow, and if you hate them all, we can go shopping!”
Elena’s face fell. There was no way she could refuse the double date without telling Aria the full truth.
“I’ll check if Joshua is free then.”

“Yay! Let’s go for 8pm this Friday–we can go later if his work is keeping him. Just let me know!”
It turned out that Joshua was free. Elena barely had to explain the situation before he agreed. Aria was enthusiastic.
