Elena couldn’t possibly regret going on this double date more than she already did.

The night started off reasonably well. The four were seated at a nice, small and secluded table at Bouna Notte. Massimo had already taken care of the menu–apparently, hey were doing courses and therefore didn’t have to make any choices.

It reminded Elena of the time Massimo had taken her out for dinner after shopping. When it was just the two of them.

He had been so surprisingly kind and attentive then, showering her with little gifts that revealed how much he paid attention to even the littlest things about her. Elena hadn’t ever felt that special before.

Elena could almost pretend she was back at that special evening–but it was impossible with two extra people present. Especially since Elena was seated across from Joshua instead of Massimo.

But oddly, instead of sitting next to Aria–which would have been more traditional–Massimo took the seat next to Elena. Aria, for her part, didn’t react as she took her seat next to Joshua.

Elena didn’t understand why Massimo made that choice. Was this a more formal seating arrangement she was unaware of?

That had to be it.

“I told you the wine was great, right, El?” Aria asked.

Elena nodded. Despite her nerves, nothing had gone terribly wrong.

Aria pouted. “You’ve barely drunk anything though!”

It was true. While everyone was already on their third glass. Elena was still on her first.

Elena couldn’t help but remember her mistaken drink order at ABC Casino. She shock her head–she wouldn’t embarrass herself again.

But before Elena could come up with a reasonable fake story, Massimo had spoken up for her.

“She is a doctor, Aria,” Massimo defended. “Elena likes to stay prepared for any emergency.”

“But she’s off work,” Aria protested.

“And it’s her decision to drink or not drink,” Massimo said seriously. He sounded almost outright impatient with his date. “Leave it, Aria.”

Aria frowned but said no more,

So of course Joshua took up the slack in the conversation.

“So who suggested this place?” Joshua asked. “It’s very upscale.”

“Aria did,” Massimo said.

Yes, Elena wasn’t imagining it–her boss was definitely boed already. They had barely gotten through the soup

course!

Aria smiled lovingly at Massimo before turning to Joshua. only suggested it because Massimo took us here a few weeks ago. It’s very fancy, isn’t it?”

“It is,” Joshua agreed. “I must confess, I never would’ve picked this place myself, but it is lovely.”

“Don’t worry,” Massimo said with a smirk. “I’ll be footing the bill. I know a state prosecutor’s salary could never afford a meal here, let alone two.”

Elena wanted to glare at Massimo. What was he doing? Was he trying to pick a fight?

Joshua flashed a pained smile. “That’s very kind of you, Mr. Ferraro.”

Elena could tell Joshua wanted to say more, but she nudged him with her foot under the table. He luckily got the message to shut up quickly.

“Your wife certainly deserves to be treated to the finer things every now and again, Joshua. Please take care to remember that,” Massimo stated coldly.
