Chapter 51
“Not skilled?” Massimo repeated, clearly amused. “You wound me, Elena.”
“She tells it how it is,” Aria interjected. “Don’t be fooled by her smile. Oh, look, ti
ourse is coming out!”
Things might have gone well if the conversation had ended there. But between the rich food and abundance of alcohol, everyone got far too comfortable for the given situation.
“Elena,” Joshua said innocently enough, “how would you say Mr. Ferraro is at his work?”
Aria clapped her hands in excitement. “Oh, yes, tell us, El!”
“Massimo is good enough, I suppose?”
“That’s it?” Joshua pressed.
“Yes, why?” Elena said defensively.
“I was just wondering if any of the cars he worked on were in that accident a little while ago,” Joshua stated. “That terrible pile–up on Lennox Ave?”
“I did not,” Massimo replied icily. “Why don’t you believe your wife, Joshua?”
“It’s not her judgment I’m concerned about,” Joshua continued, matching Massimo’s tone. “I heard Mr. Ferraro’s associate, a Mr. Tyler Morello, was involved-”
“Do we look like the same man?” It was a question, but Massimo stated it so coldly. There was no doubt that he wanted Joshua to know he thought the man was being ridiculous- a dangerous opinion for a mafia don to have of
anyone.
Joshua didn’t even react–his eyes were perfectly still and laser focused on Massimo. “If an employee does shoddy work, the employer should know about it. Furthermore, that employer should be held responsible–that is the law of the land after all.”
“The law?” Massimo scoffed. “The law is what I-“|
Elena stood up suddenly. She hadn’t thought through her next move, but she knew if she didn’t do anything, everyone’s covers would be blown.
It worked. All three pairs of eyes were on Elena.
Unfortunately, she didn’t have a simple solution to this problem.
“Elena?” Aria asked, voice full of concern. “Are you okay?”
“No,” Elena replied. Just then, a solution came to her. “I’m actually feeling a bit sick, so my husband and I should leave.”
“Are you sure, dear?” Joshua asked. He no doubt wanted to grill Massimo for info–and he had almost gotten the don to crack, at least a little.
“Yes, we’re not even halfway done with the courses,” Massimo stated.
Elena was confused why Massimo was protesting their disappearance. Didn’t he understand what she was doing? “I’m sure,” Elena said seriously. “Let’s go, Joshua. You two enjoy the rest of your dinner.”

Grabbing Joshua’s arm, Elena quickly led him out of the restaurant.
Massimo was sad to see them go. The rest of the courses passed in a blur as Aria! and not the sort of pointless things she’d text him about. Those he enjoyed.
This was truly pointless conversation. He didn’t even bother to engage with it.
bout pointless things-
He would’ve preferred to stay home and text with Aria. At least then, he could pretend she was the same girl he had fallen in love with. When they were texting, Massimo’s mind didn’t immediately wander back to Elena.
Elena–that was a good reason for Massimo to show up to tonight’s dinner date. Even if her husband was trying to throw Massimo in jail, it was clear where Elena stood on the matter. She chose Massimo, again and again throughout the evening.
