Chapter 52

But every time she thought about that disaster double date, she just didn’t have the courage to face her friend.
Aria would no doubt want to talk about Joshua—she knew how depressed Elena had been about her mystery husband ghosting her. But that was the last thing Elena wanted to hear! Joshua might be kind and handsome, but he also had been so pushy about Massimo’s criminal activities.
Honestly, they were all very lucky Aria hadn’t caught on about her husband’s activities.
Elena wanted to make it up to Massimo. She felt responsible for her fake husband’s actions, and, unlike Aria, Elena knew Massimo wouldn’t try to sugar–coat the situation.
But half the work week went by before Elena could find a spare private moment with her boss. If she didn’t know any better, she would think Massimo was trying to avoid her.
But that was ridiculous. He was probably just busy with top secret mafia work.
So on Wednesday, Elena made sure to arrive at the Ferraro estate early. She greeted Massimo’s second–in- command and made her way over to Massimo’s office.
But Massimo was actually leaving his office. No matter–she could talk in the hallway just as easily.
Massimo looked surprised to see her, but his expression immediately dulled to its usual coldness. “You’re early,” he said neutrally.
“Yes,” Elena responded. “I wanted to talk to you about last Friday night. Joshua–I mean, my husband–was way out of line. And I’m-”
“Is that all?” Massimo asked.
Already, he was stepping around Elena and walking away. Elena quickly followed him.
“I thought you might be annoyed at me,” Elena confessed. “I mean, you have me checking with Capos instead of yourself or even your second–in–command.”
“I do have an entire criminal organization to run,” Massimo said coldly.
“I’m aware,” Elena said. She paused for a moment, trying to decide what to say. “I guess I’m just used to working with you more closely–and I guess I miss that.”
Massimo’s heart skipped a beat. He couldn’t have heard Elena right. She couldn’t really miss him, could she? “Besides,” Elena continued, completely unaware of Massimo’s inner thoughts and feelings, “you’ve been sending me out on so many house calls. I feel like I’ve barely been in your mansion this week.”
That had been by design. Just like Massimo’s current limited contact.
Luca had gathered good information on Tyler. The hideout looked legitimate. So now Massimo was pouring every resource he had into figuring out what Tyler was up to.
Massimo had men following Tyler, watching his money and ordering history, and keeping tabs on anyone Tyler
