Elena stared at her roommate Aria. Why was she at the Ferraro estate in the middle of the night?

Elena pulled further away from Massimo as Aria rushed into the room. Luckily, Aria hadn’t seemed to notice the emotionally charged atmosphere.

Aria’s focus was entirely on Massimo.

“Oh my gosh,” she cried as she rushed to Massimo’s side. “I came as soon as I heard you were hurt. Are you in any pain?”

Massimo barely met Aria’s eyes. He looked annoyed. “I’m fine–Elena has already taken care of everything.” Was it Elena’s imagination, or did Massimo sound bitter?

Aria looked at Elena. Her eyes widened in surprise before she shot her friend a nervous smile.

Aria snaked a hand around Massimo’s waist, pulling herself closer to him. Elena couldn’t help but feel numb to the whole situation. All she could think about was the fact that Aria and Massimo were married–yet she had almost ruined their relationship.

“El, you’re a miracle worker,” Aria praised. She looked back at Massimo, her expression turning amused. “I’m surprised you called your doctor before your wife.”

Massimo looked helplessly at Elena. Elena looked away.

“I should go,” Elena said.

“No,” Massimo immediately protested. He grabbed Elena’s arm.

Elena couldn’t help feeling like she didn’t belong there.

“Darling,” Aria scoffed, “you can’t just keep a grown woman at your house in the middle of the night.”

Elena felt that she shouldn’t have come here at all. Aria was Massimo’s wife–it was wrong for him to call her over at three in the morning. Any reasonable woman would protest it.

“A doctor can treat my injuries,” Massimo weakly defended. “That’s the only reason I called Elena here.”

Elena’s heart sank at his words.

Aria looked slowly at the two. Under her gaze, Elena pulled her arm out of Massimo’s grip.

“If Elena still wants to,” Aria finally said.

Elena clinically treated Massimo’s head wound. Like she thought, it was a shallow cut.

There was no reason for him to call a doctor, Elena thought to herself. He wanted to see her–and Elena couldn’t deny she wanted to see him.

But under Aria’s watchful eyes, Elena no longer felt that magnetic attraction–only deep shame. She hurriedly

washed the cut and applied a small amount of cream.

Aria winced at every movement. “Are you sure you’re okay, sweetheart?” she said, countless times. Massimo only ever made a grunt of acknowledgement.

Elena figured he must be feeling ashamed of his actions, too.

And yet I wanted him to go farther, Elena thought to herself. Her face began to heat up with both desire and shame.

“Aria,” Massimo said suddenly. “I need to tell you something. I’m part of the mafia, and being with me will only bring danger.”

Elena was lucky she had stepped aside to grab a butterfly bandage. Neither Massimo or Aria were looking at her, so she could nearly drop her medical supplies without ruining their moment.

“I lied to you about everything,” Massimo continued. “I practically run the criminal underworld, and I have been doing this since I was a child. I understand if you want to break up-”

“Never,” Aria said fiercely.

“But, Aria, think about—”

“I have,” Aria said. “Do you think I never noticed the lies piling up? Your suit costs more than a mechanic makes in a lifetime, you’ve only ever eaten at five star restaurants, and you never talk about your work.”

“Why didn’t you say something?” Massimo sounded genuinely confused.

“Because I didn’t want to lose you,” Aria replied.

She cupped his face–her fake long fingernails poked his skin, just barely not drawing blood. Yet Massimo didn’t move a muscle.

The small action felt so intimate. Elena forced herself to look away as her insides churned.

“I love you so, so much. I couldn’t bare the thought of being apart. So please, Massimo, never say such foolish things again–I’d follow you to ends of the earth.”

Elena couldn’t stomach any more of the lover’s conversation. She felt ill.

Aria had left the door wide open, so Elena easily slipped out of the office, unnoticed.

Elena felt empty as she walked down the estate’s long hallways. Everything struck her as so incredibly wrong.

She should feel happy that Massimo had grown closer to his wife. She should feel happy that Aria had finally found a reliable, stable partner to love. But all Elena felt was sick to her stomach.

She wanted to run home. As she exited the mansion, the cool night air stung at her face. The darkness of the night just made Elena feel more alone.

“El, wait up!”

Elena turned to see Aria running to catch up with her. Elena tried to bottle up her feelings and keep her expression neutral. Aria probably had some important questions about Massimo’s injuries and treatment.

Elena could keep it together long enough to answer them. Then she could run home and stew in her shame and other awful feelings.

“Yes,

Aria?” Elena asked. “What can I help with?”
