Massimo didn’t look up as Aria returned to the office. She walked up to him ar superficial things he barely even felt.

Aria looked at him with pity. “You poor thing,” she cooed. “Your doctor didn’t even bandage your cut–let me help you.”

Aria wouldn’t hear any of Massimo’s protests. She wiped at his cut with a damp cloth, then a dry on, and then finally placed a butterfly band–aid on it.

It shouldn’t have taken long, but it felt like those simple actions took an hour. Aria was too close in his personal space, her hands wandering all over Massimo’s head and torso. Massimo was certain his wife was trying to show off all her best angles, too–she nearly whacked him in the face with her breasts with how much strutting she was doing.

It all felt so ridiculous to Massimo. Elena’s treatment was by the book but was somehow filled with far more love. When she cared for his injuries, Massimo felt drawn to her very essence.

Yet even as Aria placed a kiss on his forehead, Massimo felt nothing from all his wife’s efforts.

“You should leave,” Massimo said firmly. “It’s late.”

“Won’t you get lonely?” Aria asked. She batted her eyelashes at him seductively.

“I have work to do,” Massimo insisted.

He leaned down and began putting his papers back on his desk. Aria followed his lead.

“Are you hunting down the man who attacked you?” Aria asked as she picked up papers. She looked at one for only a moment before losing interest. “Is he in the mafia, too?”

“Yes.” Massimo quickly snatched his papers from Aria–they weren’t anything a civilian needed to see.

Aria held up her hands in a placating manner. “Just trying to help, my dear husband. So what did this big bad mafia guy do?”

Massimo wasn’t in the mood for his wife’s questions. “Nothing you need to worry abou

of.”

“That’s my big, strong, tough guy,” Aria said, grabbing his shoulder and giving it a squeeze. “Aren’t I so lucky to have you all to myself?”

Massimo only grunted as he moved past his wife. He began to right the overturned furniture. Still Aria followed him.

“I’m serious, the other women must fling themselves at you constantly,” Aria continued. “I’m so grateful you don’t have a wandering eye. Otherwise, I might get jealous you’re so close to your doctor.”

Massimo paused in his work. Did Aria know about his feelings for Elena? She couldn’t–it took Massimo so long to realize he even slightly cared about her.

It would be impossible for someone to understand his feelings better than himself.

“I’m going to take a quick shower. You should go home–good night, Aria,” Massimo said before making his way to his bathroom.
