Massimo waited at the Violet Garden with his grandfather. While the museum’s large selection of flowers was beautiful, Massimo barely gave them any thought.

They had to arrive early, of course. With both the former and current Don of All Dons in the same place, it was the smart thing to do. Especially with Tyler stirring up trouble.

Massimo idly wondered if Tyler was working alone. He probably had smaller mafia fo workthat way Tyler could claim ignorance of their action. Tyler was clever like that.

Massimo shook his head. He didn’t need to be thinking about work right now.

He needed to focus on what he would say when his wife arrive.

Quit pacing, will you?Fabio called from his wooden picnic table.

ing the real dirty

The museum hadn’t cut any corners when building their gazebo. They even had delicately carved but sturdy picnic benches placed all around it.

Fabio sighed and walked up the gazebo to stand by Massimo.

I’ve just been thinking about this relationship with my wife,Massimo said.

I figured as much.Fabio gave him a rueful smile. Any fool with half a brain could have guessed that.

I’ve been thinking about ending it for even longer.

Fabio scrutinized Massimo. The mafia don knew his grandfather could tell the truth of that statement.

They stayed quiet for a long moment. Both of them stared out at the sea of beautiful colors caused by simple fauna -but neither of them fully appreciate the scene. Their minds were elsewhere.

Things weren’t always perfect between your parents,Fabio confessed softly. I fear I might have painted an idyllic version of them.

I’m not surprised. Father was your favorite son,Massimo said numbly.

Massimo knew from many mafia meetings that was the case. Fabio had taken his second child on business trips far more than his first son. And Massimo had heard plenty of stories of Fabio talking up the young boy constantly as he grew up and secured his position.

That favoritism was partially why Massimo had such a poor relationship with his father’s side of them had joined their cousinsfamily, the Conti family.

amily. Many

Massimo had always tried to deal with them carefully. He was able to bond with many of them over his grandfather’s harsh treatment and lack of affection. But still, as evidenced by the traitor Giuseppe Conti, there were still plenty of enemies left among the Contis.

You must think I’m a foolish old man for that,Fabio replied. You shouldafter all, I raised you to be better than myself. At least in that respect.

Massimo hated talking to his grandfather sometimes. It was such a crapshoot on how the old man would behave.

Would he be all prickly and complain about Massimo’s shortcomings? Or would he get all sentimental? It confused Massimo to no end.

You said Mother and Father didn’t always get along,Massimo pressed, trying to keep the old man on track.

Why? Was it because Mother was from such a small family?

Small mafia families didn’t have a lot of power or resources, but they had plenty of rules and traditionseven more than bigger, more powerful mafia families. They often were good at keeping alliances and deals between other small families to survive. Unlike big families, small families needed to consult a lot people before they made any big movesotherwise they might risk angering whoever they were allied

Fabio scoffed. No, my boy. I mean, I suppose that didn’t help things, but they a grown adults.

h

use they were two

Fabio sighed as he rested his hands on the gazebo’s railings. You mother would scream loud enough to wake the dead, and your father would tune her out and turn to stone. They would argue over big important things like mafia business or raising you, but they argued about stupid things, toowhere to go on vacation, what to have for dinner, and what bloody curtains to hang in the guest bedroom.

Massimo frowned. He couldn’t remember any such arguments. Sure, he was little when his parents died, but shouldn’t he recall at least one memory of their fights if they were so common?

Love isn’t perfection,Fabio said. It’s about loving even the imperfections.

But at what point do you decide there are too many imperfections?Massimo asked. At what point do you decide arguing is just making the both of you miserable? When should two people break up instead of trying to make something broken work?

Fabio closed his eyes and thought about Massimo’s questions. Of course the boy had turned his words back at him. Fabio had trained the young man to be logical to a fault.

If Fabio had one regret, it was that he hadn’t shown Massimo enough love. He had let the boy grow cold and isolated out of the misplaced belief that it would make him indestructible.

Fabio sighed. He had been such a fool when he was younger.

Fabio didn’t want to admit it, but Massimo had a point. Elena was the kindest soul Fabio had met, but she had her own goals and dreams. She had originally laughed at the idea of getting marriedmuch like Massimo had.

But did these two young people deserve to have an old man’s whims forced upon them? Just because they had some similarities and complimentary skills and personality, did that mean they were destined to be together? Fabio thought he had been doing what was best for each of them, but had he just been selfish this time? He had gotten Elena wrapped up into his mix and tried to make her fix it for him. Had Fabio ever about what she wanted?

Fabio’s phone buzzed. He looked at his new text message and sent off a reply.

What is it?Massimo asked urgently.

Your wife was injured. She’s in the hospital,Fabio said.

Massimo frowned.

pped to think

Let me ask her what hospital she’s at,Fabio suggested. “We can go visit her together. I don’t see why we should let all that nice food your chefs prepared go to waste.

Massimo grabbed Fabio’s phone. Before Fabio could protest, Massimo spoke. She didn’t send you the address.

Fabio snatched his phone back. ObviouslyI hadn’t asked her for it yet. The youth todayI can’t believe you’d behave so disrespectfully to your own grandfather.
