Chapter 70

Elena helped out with work around the Ferraro estate, details from his discussion with Tyler Morello–even afte
o didn’t change his tune. He didn’t mention ar Llena’s subtle and overt pressing and prodding.
Elena hadn’t been eavesdropping, her curiosity would be killing her.
As it was, Elena didn’t give up. She dropped hints about the last time they had worked together at the Ferraro’s black tie event.
“We make a great team, don’t you think?” Elena asked.
“I suppose we do,” Massimo replied neutrally.
“I’ve gotten much better at spotting danger, I think. Luca gave me some tips on finding hidden guns before they’re drawn,” Elena said.
“That’s a good skill to have.” Massimo didn’t even look at her as he filed some paperwork.
“I wonder what Tyler is planning,” Elena mused to herself as she went over some of Massimo’s records. “I hate not being able to keep that guy in sight.”
Massimo had just hummed in agreement–like he hadn’t even heard her!
Even when a servant came back with two tickets to the cruise–three days away–Massimo kept quiet.
“That’s a quick turn around,” Elena commented. “Are you planning on bringing Aria?”
“No,” Massimo said bluntly.
“You should bring someone,” Elena insisted.
Elena didn’t understand why he wasn’t asking her to attend. He had her go to that business party before. If it would’ve looked bad for him to go to that without a date to such a comparatively low stakes affair, Massimo would look outright terrible attending the cruise by himself.
“I’ll be going alone,” Massimo said.
“What?!”
“I can’t take my wife–she’s recovering, and even if she wasn’t, it would be too dangerous,” Massimo explained. And if I take my second–in–command to an event where no one is bringing their guards, I’d look paranoid and weak. So I have no other option than to attend it alone.”
“You have other options,” Elena muttered.
Elena wasn’t sure if Massimo heard or not. But his next words felt very pointed all the same.
“Please focus on your medical work while I’m gone, Dr. Elena.”
As Elena rode the bus home, she tried to figure out what to do.
Tyler was obviously up to something nefarious. There has to be a reason why he wants Massimo on a boat in the middle of nowhere.
Tyler was a vengeful man, and it was clear after the events at ABC Casino he considered Massimo an enemy. Elena wondered if Tyler had ever considered Massimo a superior–or just someone to topple from the top spot.
Elena figured Tyler would want to deal with an enemy one of two ways. Either he wanted Massimo disgraced in

front of all the mafia men with any real power, or Tyler planned
ssimo. If not both.
Elena was fairly confident Tyler would want Massimo dead. If he was still alive, there would always be the threat. of Massimo returning looming over Tyler. It’s why when mafia wars happened, the winning side almost always obliterated the losing side–or lived to regret their mercy.
And given Tyler’s sadistic tendencies, Elena was confident Tyler would never choose mercy.
All this thinking only made Elena more sure that Massimo needed someone looking out for him. So as soon as she got home, she looked up the name of Tyler’s cruise ship. With the rapidly approaching departure date, Massimo would need all the information and help he could get.
Massimo stayed up later than he should have. He knew this bad habit of his wasn’t going to get fixed any time
soon.
He called his men and made sure his territory would be strong while he was on the cruise. The last thing he needed to worry about was Tyler or his allies taking the direct approach while Massimo was out on the ocean.
Massimo spent hours planning with Luca on possible attacks and how to respond. He would’ve kept going if his second–in–command hadn’t physically threatened him.
