Chapter 71
“Get some rest,” Luca had insisted. “You’re not good to anyone like this. On my life, I swear I will take care of New York–now go to bed.”
Massimo had gotten some well–needed rest, but not enough. He got up early to hear back from a few low level lieutenants who had followed Tyler’s movements. They hadn’t found anything concrete or suspicious.
It was a waste of time, but at least it reminded Massimo to call Aria and make sure his gifts had arrived.
Then it was back to the usual work of the Mafia King–which always involved more paperwork than anyone would expect. Managing any organization–even a criminal one–required a lot of mind–numbing upkeep.
Just as Massimo felt his eyes beginning to close, Elena burst into his office. She was carrying plenty of loose notebook pages, which she immediately spread out on his desk.
“I know you’re insistent on doing this alone,” Elena said, “but you need to still be smart about this. I found the latest blueprints of the cruise ship. Now, given the model, if Tyler is planning to sabotage it–and make it look like an accident–you need to be wary of this…”
Elena passionately pointed out potential failure points of the ship–and how to combat them. She proposed likely room layouts and how they might reveal subtly who was more on Tyler’s side–subtleties Tyler himself likely wouldn’t have noticed. She brought up potential employees that would get assigned to the cruise, and which ones she suspected of having sympathetic leanings toward the Ferraros.
Massimo was confused, to say the least.
This wasn’t Elena’s job. Why was she doing so much, just for his sake?
But then Massimo realized something–Elena’s job was to make sure Massimo was healthy.
Of course she would be passionate about the topic of making sure Massimo stayed alive. Even if it wasn’t strictly medical, Elena would never let any harm fall to her patients. As she spoke, Massimo recognized the worry and care in every contingency she thought of and presented to him.
Looking at her, Massimo was reminded of the sheer loyalty he had found in his second–in–command so many years ago. Despite not having a shared past, Elena’s loyalty rivaled that of Luca’s.
Yet Massimo had set Elena to the sidelines. Why was he making such a bad decision like that? If Massimo could bring Luca to the event without seeming weak, he would.
So why was Massimo hesitating to bring Elena?
Massimo knew at that moment that Elena was right. He caught all her hints of bringing her with. He just didn’t want to face it head on.
Because Massimo was being irrational. He was worried that Elena would hurt again, so he was ignoring the obvious, logical choice of bringing her along.
Yet, even realizing this, Massimo still hesitated to speak up. He didn’t want to put Elena in danger, which was ridiculous because just being the Ferraro family doctor put Elena in danger. Yet the idea of Elena getting shot again made Massimo’s resolve waver.
But Massimo had a lifetime of training to overcome his emotions.
“Accounting for the weather forecast during the cruise,” Elena continued, “we should see if you have any darker shirts to hide bullet proof armor. You have sleek models, but they’ll still show if you wear the traditional light and
