Chapter 73
Elena wanted to beam at how excellently her boss had handled the situation–by bringing his personal doctor and offering her availability for emergencies, he had both shown off his generosity and called Tyler’s preparations into question. But Elena didn’t have the time to spare.
She needed to be completely focused on potential threats.
Massimo mingled with the other mafia members, Elena at his side. He appreciated that the stylist he hired was truly competent at her job–she had somehow managed to balance Elena’s insistence on only the bare necessities with the opulence and grace required to be at the Don of All Dons‘ side.
Elena was wearing a white, long dress that flowed off her body like waves with each step she took. The blue abstract design certainly helped the illusion. And if that wasn’t enough, the small blue gemstones sprinkled throughout the material caught the fading sunlight to add a bit of extra presence.
Needless to say, she was stunning.
But Massimo was more impressed by Elena’s attitude. At his last party, Elena had stayed relatively silent but now she took a much active role. Elena quickly told everyone of her profession, effectively cementing herself as someone to go to during emergencies but also lowering everyone’s guards–no one would be intimidated by a humble doctor, after all.
Elena kept up polite conversation with women and men alike, hinting here and there when she though there was something Massimo should take notice of. It was remarkable how much more confident Elena had become in engaging in the social mafia world.
Not to mention that she did all this while taking careful glances around their surroundings. Glances subtle enough that no one would notice and call her paranoid or think she was up to trouble.
Massimo had seen plenty of mafia women, but they normally balanced their competency with overt sexualization. Yet Elena had managed to blend into the underworld without fully changing herself.
Elena never failed to surprise and impress him.
Just as Elena was growing tired of mingling, Tyler entered the boat and tapped his cane to get everyone’s
attention.
“Thank you all so much for joining,” Tyler said. “Unfortunately, not everyone was so kind to accept my invitations. Rather than let those rooms go to waste, I decided to sell them off to some rich civilians.”
Immediately, everyone in the crowd was murmuring. Elena couldn’t blame them. Why would Tyler let outsiders invade a promised mafia–only space?
“I don’t know if you’ve all heard,” Tyler continued, “but there are some police investigations going on in this area, so I figured this would provide some protection for our cruise. I couldn’t let such trivial matters ruin our trip.

Tyler might not have outright insulted Massimo, but his meaning was clear to everyone. The cruise was about to set sail only a little bit away from New York City–Massimo’s city of power. Tyler was accusing Massimo of not taking care of his territory.
As Elena came to this conclusion, so did everyone else. Elena looked at Massimo. He took her champagne glass wordlessly and made his way over to Tyler.
“So kind,” Massimo spoke over the crowd’s hushed murmurs.
Instantly, all eyes were on him. Tyler’s flair for dramatic pauses had given Massimo an excellent opportunity to interrupt.
“Everyone, let’s make a toast,” Massimo said, raising his champagne glass. “To peace during this little vacation and all of us dons‘ willingness to uphold mafia ideals.”
As people hesitantly raised the glasses, Massimo smirked. He let out a short, breathy laugh.
