Chapter 74
Elena squinted at the man.
“Kyle Dioli?” Elena asked suddenly. “Is that you?”
The Diolis did have a single son, not that much older than herself. Though she hadn’t seen him in quite some time, he must’ve become the leader of his family recently.
“I’m surprised you remembered me. Though I go by Capo Dioli, ever since Dad died in that shootout.”
“I’m sorry for your loss,” Elena said automatically.
Kyle waved her off. “Today’s a happy day, so let’s focus on that.”
Elena let herself get led to the bar. It didn’t look like Kyle was hiding a gun under his light jacket.
“Congrats on the promotion,” Elena said, trying to fish for what Kyle wanted. “You’re pretty young for a capo- that must feel nice to have your efforts recognized.”
“I could say the same to you,” Kyle replied. “You’re working for the Don of All Dons now.”
“I stay busy,” Elena smiled.
“Just don’t get too busy,” Kyle warned. “Your family is really worried about you–send a text or something their way sometimes. Nothing is more important than family.”
Elena resisted the urge to roll her eyes. So this is how her family can still get in her way and cause trouble. Typical.
“I agree,” Elena replied coolly, “but family matters should be handled by family members only.”
To her surprise, Kyle nodded along. “Totally agree with you there. Just couldn’t see your old man next week and look him in the eye if I didn’t make a token effort–but it’s your family, your business.”
“Is this mere obligation then?” Elena asked, suddenly curious. “If so, I can assure you, you’ve done what you can. And there are more important people you can make deals with tonight than a humble doctor.”
“Mostly obligation,” Kyle explained. He gets the attention of the ship’s bartender and flashes two fingers–two glasses of whiskey are slid across the bar’s countertop-
“But,” Kyle continued, “I also wanted an excuse to offer a beautiful woman like yourself a drink.” Kyle grabbed one glass and offered it to Elena in toast.
Elena offered a smile with no warmth. Before she can do anything else though, a man’s hand reached behind and snatched up the untouched glass.
A hand Elena instantly recognized.
Massimo looked at the glass, clearly unimpressed. “The lady and I can get our own meals and drinks,” Massimo said coldly.
Massimo quickly dropped the glass. He grabbed Elena’s hand and dragged her away.
If that was the only time Massimo acted oddly during the banquet, Elena would’ve let it go. The problem was that interrupted conversation was the first of many.
Massimo had seemingly used up all his words for the evening. Instead of mingling, he picked a spot by the ship’s railings to lean against. The few waiters who weren’t scared off by his resting glare were rewarded with a curt nod

as Massimo took their offered champagne glasses.
Elena stayed nearby him, but she very quickly wished she hadn’t. Especially as the evening went on and the other mafia women got brave.
Elena could name which families the women came from–and what men they were allegedly dating–but none of that seemed to matter. They all threw themselves at Massimo and tried to get his attention.
Most kept to showing off their assets–easy to do in their tight clothes–or openly flirting with him. Most kept their words tame, but a few bold women described the most raunchiest innuendos to him.
Elena could feel her patience draining with each new woman.
Lucilla Abano leaned in close to Massimo. She whispered something in his ear, giggling–then she squeezed one of his arms.
“Come on, dear,” she said, laying on her seductive tone thick. “There’s better things to do with a woman than watch her move–unless that’s something you’re into?”
Massimo’s approach with Lucilla had been the same approach he seemed to have with everyone tonight–wait for her to get bored and leave on her own.
Elena could see the merit in this strategy. But she wasn’t sure it was the right choice. Especially with someone as handsy as Lucilla.
Elena saw Lucilla lean in again, this time grabbing at Massimo’s waist. Her hands teasingly held onto the belt.
Elena saw red.
“Don Massimo,” she said loudly. “Your oversea partners are ready to take that call with you?”
To Elena’s frustrations, Massimo seemed to regard her with the same cold indifference as he showed everyone else.
“We should go now, my don, or else we’ll be late. Everything has already been set up in your room.”
Lucilla finally backed off. “I’ll be waiting here then. We can have a celebratory ‘dance‘ later.”
Elena quickly ushered Massimo off the deck and further into the ship.
