Chapter 75
It was only after Elena had got them both into their shared room–two beds, thank god–and done a quick sweep for bugs or eavesdroppers that she turned to Massimo.
“What the hell is wrong with you tonight?” she raged.
Massimo only raised an eyebrow. “This is a work mission, not an actual party for us. You do understand that?”
“I’m aware,” Elena replied, “but your sour mood isn’t helping.”
“It’s the normal mood I have for these things,” Massimo defended.
Elena threw up her hands. “Yes, sure, whatever! But you’re married, Massimo–you can’t women just treat you like that or say those sexual things to you!”
Massimo calmly met her gaze. “I don’t plan on staying married for long.”
Elena was not prepared to hear those words. It was like the earth stopped turning.
“What?” she asked blankly.
Aria and Massimo were meant for each other–Elena had repeated that fact in her head until she could stand to think about their relationship at all. While she initially was on the fence about them, she had seen plenty of evidence of how intimate and loving they could be.
“You can’t get divorced,” Elena insisted. “You might be having issues right now because Aria is in the hospital, but she should recover soon and then things will be back to normal—”
“That’s exactly the problem,” Massimo countered. “Normal with that woman is terrible.”
It seemed Elena’s insistence had back–fired. Instead of calming Massimo down, she had worked him into a frenzy. He paced the room in a huff.
“She’s nothing like the woman she presents herself to be! She’s loud and needs to be the center of attention and has no real value of anything. She’s a materialistic whore–not the type of woman I’d ever want to be married to!”
Elena knew she should further defend her friend, but part of her was unsure if that would make this situation worse. Elena also realized Massimo had drank quite a few champagne glasses during the banquet. Elena hadn’t been concerned about those–she had watched the servers pour each glass and verified there was no poison in them.
But Massimo had clearly drunk enough of them to get drunk. She had to admit he held his alcohol pretty well- she never noticed his face reddening or his gestures becoming clumsy. But doing the simple math, there was no
Massimo was sober.
“The woman I’d actually want,” Massimo continued, “isn’t like Aria. She’s quiet, thoughtful, and skilled in her field or hobbies or whatever but always willing to hear other people’s opinions. Maybe she’s too stubborn for own good but that can come in handy sometimes!”
As Massimo muttered and prattled on, Elena realized Massimo wasn’t describing a vague woman, but someone specific. Her heart leapt into her throat.
“She’s kind to a fault,” Massimo said, his pacing finally slowing down to a stop in front of Elena. “And though that’s a weakness for many, she sharpens her wit and her cleverness so that it isn’t anything but a strength. She’s beautiful, without even trying, and she looks more magnificent in blue than pink.”

Elena recalled Massimo’s insistence that she wear blue tonight “to make a good entrance.”
“Her skin is fair and she keeps her hair in a messy bun most of the time because she’s too busy with work, but it still looks as lovely as it does down and curled.”
Elena caught sight of a stray curl from her professional makeover–she so rarely had the time to do anything nearly as fancy as this.
“That’s the kind of woman I want to be married to.”
