Chapter 76
Elena’s call immediately failed to go through. Either her husband’s phone was off or he had seen her number and quickly declined her call.
Or he had her number blocked.
In Elena’s heart, she knew that last option was the most likely one. Though she had tried to stay true to him, her husband really didn’t want anything to do with her.
Massimo, oblivious to Elena’s plight, was lying down on the bed. Elena couldn’t make out his expression. But she didn’t need to make any guesses as he answered the phone.
“What is it?” he growled. Still annoyed, evidently.
“Hey, Massimo!” Aria’s voice rang out.
He must’ve misclicked a button and put her own speaker–allowing Elena to hear every word of their conversation. Was he too drunk to realize his mistake or fix it? He made no move to touch his phone again, leaving it next to his head.
Massimo groaned.
“How are you doing, my love?” Aria continued, her voice bubbly. “Is work going okay?”
“What do you want, Aria,” Massimo asked flatly.
Though he was a chatterbox moments ago, he wasn’t in the mood to talk now. Elena couldn’t help but think how childish her boss was being.
“I just wanted to hear from the best husband in the world! Is that so wrong?
“Say what you really want or I’m hanging up,” Massimo warned her.
Aria’s sigh was the only noise heard in the room for a long moment. Elena briefly wondered if Massimo had a lot of conversations with Aria like this–but then Elena remembered it wasn’t her place to get involved in their relationship.
“I wanted to surprise you,” Aria said quietly, “so when I saw that some of the cruise rooms were being rented out, I got one. I was… really worried about you, Massimo. Could I come by and see you?”
The pain in Aria’s voice reminded Elena of Massimo’s drunken kiss–her roommate would surely hate her after this. Massimo’s cheating behavior would surely crush Aria.
“If you’re healed enough to travel to à mafia cruise, you’re healed enough to hear bad news,” Massimo replied.‘ So let me be honest with you–I want a divorce. You’ll be financially compensated fairly for this entire ordeal, I promise you, but this farce can’t keep going on.”
“No,” Aria immediately replied. “I really don’t know where this is coming from, Massimo. You must be more overworked than I thought.”
“My mind is set,” Massimo said harshly.
Another sigh filled the small room. Elena felt her chest tighten at the scene.

“People are dancing on the deck,” Aria explained, voice light but hesitant. “Everyone is allowed there tonight and there’s a wonderful band playing. Could you meet me there for just one dance?”

Before Massimo’s cruelty could strike again, the phone line went dead–Aria had hung up first.
Elena couldn’t stand to be in the rented room another moment long. “I’m leaving,” Elena told Massimo. “I’ll be looking on the deck for potential danger.”
“Elena, wait,” Massimo said. He quickly sat up–and thought he could hide it well, Elena imagined his vision might’ve gone spotty. Now that she knew what to look for, she could see through Massimo’s disguises.
