Chapter 77

But as Massimo sat and began to sober up, he could find one big fault of his ownhe shouldn’t have kissed Elena.

He had done his best to not mess up her marriage, even though she was married to the prosecutor who was trying to get all mafia men thrown in jail. But Massimo had gone and kissed her! What was he thinking?

Massimo got up. He needed to borrow a page from Elena’s bookhe needed to go find her and apologize.

Massimo scanned the deck. There were certainly a lot of people aboutsome mafia, some civilians. A live band played merrily on their instruments, working the crowd into a dancing throng of people.

He couldn’t spot Elena anywhere.

Massimo! You came!

Aria was a different storyshe had instantly spotted him. She went to grab his arm, but Massimo skillfully pulled it back.

Aria looked lovely. She was dressed in a sparkling pink dress. The material was tight and went down to her knees but not before swooping low into her neckline.

If not for her deliberate choice of long matching opera gloves, Massimo would believe Aria had never been in any serious danger. As it stood, she seemed far too lively and cheery for someone who was supposed to be resting in a hospital bedhad he really needed to treat her so delicately lately?

I am on this trip for business,Massimo told Aria frankly. I only came here for thatbut if you insist on wasting my time, let me repeat my earlier request. I want to get divorced.

Aria, thankfully, didn’t immediately deny his request like earlier. She instead stared at him, up and down, and regarded his every muscle.

If this is really something you’re serious about, she said, her voice devoid of her usual annoying, bubbling cadence, I’ll consider it.

Thank you-

Aria held up a hand in front of Massimo. Then she playfully lowered it+offering her hand to Massimo. For the price of a dance.

Massimo huffed. As much as he was growing to loathe Aria, he had to admire her persistence in getting what she wantedit reminded him a lot of Elena.

Only Elena was more gracious. Aria was childish in comparison,

Fine,he gritted out. He snatched Aria’s hand and pulled her into position. You get one dance.

Lucky me,Aría crowed.

Massimo had taken plenty of dancing lessons as part of Fabio’s oldschool manners classes.

You’ll look like a fool at all the upper crust parties,Fabio had often chided him. You don’t have to like any of this, but you do have to be flawless at all of it.

Massimo was reminded of those words as he danced with his soon to be exwife. Aria was nearly as talented as Massimoshe kept up with all his more complicated moves, letting herself be moved like a delicate doll. But no matter how technically impressive their dancing was, Massimo hated every moment of it.

As he moved them across the dance floor, he spotted the figure he came here to seeElena. Massimo kept his eyes on her as the band kept playing. As soon as this song was over, he would talk to Elena.

Except Elena was dancing with someone. It took Massimo a moment to recognize the man without his signature cane, but it was Tyler Morello.
