Chapter 78

Elena arrived at the deck of the ship. She took a long, deep breath. Tonight was really getting out of hand.
She needed to figure out what to say to Massimo–once he was sober. She shouldn’t interfere in his relationship with his wife, but that included being the instigating force behind their breakup.
But that was probably overemphasizing her importance, wasn’t it? Maybe Massimo wanted to kiss just anyone beyond Aria, and Elena was just the closer person. Either way, Elena wasn’t going to overthink it.
Elena only needed to tell Massimo off for kissing her when they were both married to other people–even if Elena was practically divorced in all but name.
As Elena thought, she noticed the festivities kicking off. A live band played enthusiastically. The deck had quickly transformed into a dance floor–helped by all the fairy light strings hung around.
Despite the late hour, so many people–mafia members and civilians–were having a wonderful party. The bar was serving plenty of alcohol and small finger foods. Dancing could easily last for another three hours or so.
Elena furrowed her brows in thought. Was this a plot of Tyler’s to get everyone off balance? If all the mafia heads were hungover during their meetings, they wouldn’t be able to think all that rationally about their upcoming decisions.
Alternatively, Tyler was just playing at being a gracious host. Maybe trying to show off his wealth? He could be making a statement of how much more generous he was with his spoils than Massimo was.
Elena sighed again. She couldn’t figure Tyler out at all. The only thing she knew was that Tyler was planning something big to happen–while they were all at sea and subsequently at his mercy.
“All by yourself, my little lamb?”
Elena turned away from the gorgeous ocean view. Tyler Morello was standing next to her, a snake oil salesman smile plastered on his face.
“Speak of the devil,” Elena muttered, “and he shall come.”
“Pardon?” Tyler asked.
“Nothing!” Elena replied hurriedly, louder and clearer this time. She needed to remember her actions reflected the Mafia Kind. ‘And even if they didn’t, Elena didn’t need another reason for Tyler to hate her.
“As I was saying,” Tyler laughed, “odd for a beautiful woman to be unattended this late. In need of an escort?”
“No thank you,” Elena replied automatically.
Elena couldn’t back up–she’d just hit into the ship’s railing. But she also couldn’t easily get passed Tyler. He was blocking her path.
Even if she could get past him, she couldn’t hope to get through the tight crowd of people dancing. The band had switched songs, playing something fast and romantic but not too loud–effectively getting everyone to pair up and dance,
Her only means of escape would be arguing with Tyler–which would easily be overheard the band’s music. Which meant everyone, both civilians and mafia members, would see and hear everything.
That would reflect back on Massimo, the man who brought her. And no matter what happened, it wouldn’t reflect well. Either Elena would be labeled rude and unfit to be here or a prize that Tyler had too easily taken.

Elena realized quickly she was trapped.
“I insist,” Tyler said. He leaned his cane against the ship’s railings and offered Elena his hand.
Elena gritted her teeth and took his hand. “Well, if you insist, then I accept.”
Tyler took Elena to the dance floor, careful to not let her anywhere near the throngs of moving people. It was more accurate to say the pair danced next to the dance floor.
Elena was pleasantly surprised by how easy he guided her into a simple box step. Not unlike how Massimo had once danced with her. Only this time, Elena had no choice in the matter.
“I mean it,” Tyler said suddenly. “You look wonderful this evening. Your boss is a fool to leave you alone.”
Elena couldn’t disguise her reaction fast enough. Tyler had struck a nerve.
