“Liar,” Elena immediately accused. “That’s not how any of this works.”

“Oh, but it is,” Tyler insisted. “It’s been quite a while, but old mafia kings have gotten replaced through other means than death and all out war. Other mafia heads can call for a vote of no confidence.”

Elena vaguely remembered hearing about such a type of vote from her father. Apparently, when she was younger, her father had almost had his title stripped. He had managed to avoid a no confidence vote–with the support of the Morello family.

But could such a thing really be done to someone as powerful as the Don of All Dons?

“This is just one of the many ways we can avoid war between the families,” Tyler said. “As long as everyone sticks to the group’s ruling.”

As Tyler moved Elena’s body with far too much ease and a nonchalant attitude, Elena considered his words. Did he really expect everyone to vote out Massimo? Or did he just want to identify potential allies for a real mafia war.

Suddenly, Tyler picked up the tempo and the song changed with his movements. Elena couldn’t place the song, but she recognized that they singer had switched to hurried Spanish lyrics. The band also seemingly struggled to play as fast as possible.

Tyler guided Elena close. The style of dancing had changed to something more sensual, requiring a more intimate set of moves. Elena found herself irked–and unable to focus on her previous train of thought.

But she kept quiet. Drawing attention to herself would just make this whole situation worse.

“Do you remember the first time we met?” Tyler suddenly asked, his voice directly at her ear.

Elena shook her head.

“Our fathers were both having a business meeting at your house,” Tyler recalled. “I saw your brother, since he and I were both allowed to sit in on the meeting. But I didn’t see you until we broke for lunch.”

Tyler’s claims had no obvious lies. Growing up, Elena had only been allowed to interact with other mafia members when she was serving drinks or other refreshments. Occasionally, she was allowed to eat a meal with them if the hour was right–but that depended entirely on her father’s moods.

“You had a haunting presence to you,” Tyler said. “You were quiet, but you drew my attention like a magnet. It was insane that they had you gracefully serving wine only to take a seat and disappear into the background like a simple shadow.”

Tyler dipped Elena down, almost letting her touch the floor. Yet he followed her downward, barely letting her get an inch away from him.

“Yet even then, my eyes never left you,” Tyler confessed. “You captured my heart that day, Elena.”

“I don’t recall this meeting,” Elena said seriously. “But even if this all happened, one beautiful memory of me doesn’t erase everything you put me through, Tyler. You tried to have me killed.”

Tyler pulled Elena close once more, spinning her as he did. “Please,” he scoffed, “if I wanted you dead from a car crash, you wouldn’t be here dancing with me.”

Thoroughly off balance, Elena stumbled as Tyler let her go. The next moment, he was behind her, thoroughly trapping her in his grasp.

“I’ve loved you for so long,” he breathed. “You’re mine, Elena, and it’s time you return home. With me.”

Elena noticed the band was starting to switch songs. Many of the couples were breaking apart, creating space to sneak through the dance floor. If Elena elbowed Tyler now, she could escape in a flash.
