Elena, now aware that Aria was watching them, tried to see things from her roommate’s perspective.

It was clear to see Massimo and Tyler were fighting–that they hated each other. But Aria knew next to nothing about the mafia world. Maybe she would guess that they were enemies because of that.

Or maybe she would see the set of Massimo’s jaw and the hardness of his eyes. Even from Elena’s perspective, it looked like Massimo was jealous of Tyler. And with how tightly he was holding Elena, it wasn’t hard to guess why Massimo was jealous.

Elena felt extremely guilty. Massimo had drunkenly kissed her only a few hours ago! While Elena didn’t have a chance to react before it was too late then, she certainly had a chance to now.

Besides, Elena didn’t want to be the type of woman who would passively destroy a relationship. She had no desire to behave like a typical mafia woman when it came to love.

Elena suddenly pushed Massimo away. She spoke loudly so that Aria–and any eavesdropping mafia members— could easily hear her.

“My feet hurt from all this dancing,” Elena said, “and I should get some rest before our meeting in a few hours. Enjoy the rest of your evening.”

Elena didn’t dare look in Tyler’s direction, but she knew Massimo was displeased and trying not to show it. Still, Elena hurriedly left the two men and headed off to find Aria.

Unfortunately, Aria had moved from her spot in front of the crowd. Elena could barely make out Aria’s hair in the crowd. Elena tried to politely move past so many people, but she quickly lost track of the woman.

It really did seem like nothing was going right this evening.

With Elena gone, Massimo could focus entirely on Tyler. At some point, the self–satisfied bastard had grabbed his ugly, gaudy cane. It barely went with his outfit, obviously acting as a statement piece.

Tyler dusted off his shirt, as if trying to physically wipe away any traces of his wrongdoings. “I tend to have very good winning streaks in Las Vegas, Don Massimo,” he insisted. “Besides, it’s never wrong to entertain a lady, is it?

“You made a deal, Tyler–don’t try to weasel out of it now that it’s inconvenient,” Massimo insisted. “Our dispute was supposed to be settled in ABC Casino, so admit I was curious over what argument you were going to bring before everyone. Your efforts to keep me in the dark were a good call, but unfortunately you’re not half as skilled as you think you are.”

Tyler dramatically touched his hand to his heart. “You wound me, my good don.”

“You’ve pressed your luck for too long, Tyler,” Massimo stated coldly. “You don’t have enough evidence or sway to get enough votes to overlook your obvious flaws and missteps. You’re at fault, and you’re going to pay for it.”

Tyler laughed. Not a polite laugh either. He laughed with his whole body, shaking as he did–it was good thing he had his cane to use as support or he might have fallen over.

“Let me let you in on a secret, Massimo, since you’re so naive on the ways of life,” Tyler said finally. “I’m a great business man because I constantly consider other deals and offers. That same skill set makes me great at seeing any situation from all possible angles–keep that in mind for tomorrow.

Elena was annoyed she had stayed up so late. The fact that the mafia meeting was in the early afternoon meant that she barely was able to get in a few hours before she had to start getting ready.
