Chapter 81
Massimo didn’t grace the jab with a retort.
All too soon, one of the mafia members seated stood up suddenly. Elena recognized the old man as being part of the Conti family–he must have taken over after his traitorous kin was caught.
“We are gathered here to decide the dispute between Dons Massimo Ferraro and Tyler Morello,” the man explained.
He quickly began speaking of evidence of their dispute. Starting with the most recent car pileup accident Tyler caused, the new Don Conti worked backwards to listed every grievance between the two–getting to their first public disagreement at ABC Casino.
After Don Conti sat down, different mafia heads took turns speaking their thoughts on the matter.
Elena was annoyed that she couldn’t defend herself or Massimo, but at least Tyler and his eye–candy were similarly kept silent.
The first ones to speak defended Massimo. They were quick to point out that Tyler had agreed to a contract and lost–if he thought the contract was unfair, he should have never participated in the card game.
But many older voices were quick to point out that Massimo should not have offered such a deal. Tyler had made a deal with the Vitale family–for the Don of All Dons to interfere in that contract was surely not right.
Elena could hear Tyler grinning as the conversation drags on. It took all her restraint to stay silent.
But then the men started arguing over whether a daughter can be traded via contracts–whether women should count as porperty essentially–and Elena felt her resolve crumbling. She balled her fists on the table.
Of course the people in charge of the underground crime world would never take her side. It didn’t matter how many lives she saved, whether she excelled in her chosen field, even her own desires! None of it mattered.
Because at the end of the day, the mafia world was awful. It only valued profit and blood.
Massimo silently placed his hand over Elena’s. It wasn’t much, but she knew Massimo was on her side.
For now.
Don Conti stood up once more. “It seems we are finally in agreement. We can all firmly say that the dispute between Don Ferraro and Don Morello was instigated by Elena Vitale.”
Elena squeezed Massimo’s hand. She had heard the same arguments of everyone present, and she knew they had nothing kind to say about a woman who sows conflict.
Even if Elena had made her intentions and desires clear from the start, it didn’t matter. Her father had promised her future to Tyler, and Elena had gone back on that deal–a deal made without her consent.
“Therefore,” Don Conti continued, “Elena Vitale will be punished. But given the complicated circumstances, we will allow luck to play a significant factor in this punishment.”
Tyler whistled low from his seat. Elena felt Massimo’s pulse quicken under her fingertips.
“Vitale will play Russian Roulette. If she loses the game, Don Morello will be proven to be in the right and Don Ferraro will pay compensation. Should she win the game, Don Morello will have to abide by his contract made in ABC Casino and will be banned from the state of New York until death, unless he is expressly invited by the reigning Don of All Dons himself.”
