Many mafia members got out of their seats. Some were leaving to continue their vacation, but the rest were preparing for Elena’s game of Russian Roulette. Tyler had, thankfully, taken himself and his date outside to get more refreshments for the room.

Because apparently the punishment of an innocent woman made the mafia members very peckish. Elena wanted to throw up. She took a deep breath and tried to think through her situation.

So what exactly happens now?Elena asked Massimo.

They’ll get out an old sixpiece revolver,Massimo explained. Someone will load one bullet and five blanks into the gun. You spin the barrel of the gun, point it at your head, and then shoot.

So it’s left up to how the barrel spins and plain luck on whether I live or die?Elena asked, suddenly aware of just how dangerous this punishment could be.

Massimo sighed. His expression darkened.

Elena,Massimo said solemnly, I want to apologize—

Don’t,Elena said seriously.

Massimo stopped dead in his tracks. Why was Elena suddenly being so stubborn about an apology? She was normally so liberal with them.

I know you can’t do anything in this situation, so don’t apologize,Elena explained. If you intervene, that would just make you look irrational and let Tyler claim more powerwhich would make everything worse for everyone, right?

Massimo paused for a long moment. Elena was being so calm and matureand in the next half hour she might be dead with a bullet in her head.

But wasn’t that just like Elena? She was always calm at the worst of times. Honestly, shouldn’t he have expected this sort of selfsacrificing behave and logical thinking from his doctor?

Massimo felt his heart swell. This was exactly why Elena was so perfect in his eyes. Her kindness really would be her downfallbut he would never ask for her to change.

Very well,he told Elena. But at least let me apologize for taking you on this cruise in the first place.

Elena smiled and shook her head. Massimo couldn’t help but feel he was talking to a stone wall.

At least this way, I got to hear about the punishment first hand,Elena said. Her tone was perfectly professional but clipped.

Massimo knew Elena could be very emotional, but here she was, about to possibly die, and she had decided to finally hide her heart. Massimo felt sad but ultimately knew he had to respect Elena’s choice.

He weakly flashed a bittersweet smile. He hoped she found some comfort from iteven if she didn’t show it.

Elena panicked as the mafia men cleared the stage and prepped it for her potential death. They were even laying down plastic sheets on the floor so her blood wouldn’t leave any stains! How was Elena supposed to stay calm at a time like this?

Elena began thinking of every decision that led to this moment. She would trade in all of them, do them all over, if only she could guarantee she would never end up in this situation.

The only certainty Elena felt in her heart was her desire to escape the mafia. She could never regret that. Her real downfall was running away and trying to find protection from a different mafia familyElena should have known that they were all equally dangerous, just in different ways.

Elena briefly wondered what her life would have been like if she had never been in the mafia. If her mother had taken her away and they had both escaped the mafia life.

Would they be living in the countryside? Life there must surely have its own challenges, but Elena felt that she could have been happy there.

Instead, she was watching mafia members prepare for her deadly punishment. She watched a man gingerly and carefully clean off an old pistolthat must be the gun she has to shoot herself with.

Elena took a deep breath. If she got out of this alive, she was going to live her life for herself, no one else.

Elena swore to herself she would never contact her mystery husband againshe could wait for Mr. Fabio to inevitably tell her about the divorce. Until then, Elena was going to earn and save as much money as she could to really disappear from the mafia for good.

After all, these people only brought danger and pain wherever they went

Massimo took the gun from one of the mafia heads.

If we’re all set, let’s get this punishment underway,he said calmly. Like his doctorthe woman he loved- wasn’t about to put a gun to her head.

“All that’s left is to load it,the mafia head replied.

Massimo wordlessly put out his hand. The other mafia man quickly handed Massimo the bullets. Though he fumbled with his hands, at least he didn’t explain which were the blanks versus the live ammunitionthe Don of All Dons could easily tell the difference.

Massimo glared at the assembled mafia membersthey all quickly moved back to their seats or left the room.

Massimo wordlessly put the bullets into the gun’s chamber.

Elena walked over to Massimo. She tried to steel herself for what was to come.

Unfortunately, she had to pass by Tyler to get there.

Aim slightly lower than your head,Tyler whispered. You’ve never handled a gun before, so it won’t be suspicious if you grip slipsfrom the kickback and you end up getting hit in the shoulder by mistake.I won’t press for your death.

As soon as he had said his piece, Tyler was gonetaking his seat among the other mafia dons. Still, his words left Elena rattled,

Could she really aim that precisely? Besides that, was there even anyone on the ship who could prevent her from bleeding out? Elena doubted that she could survive any bullet wound that wouldn’t raise suspicion among the dons -she was the only competent doctor that she knew was on board.

And if a miracle did happen and Elena survived being shot, she would belong to the sadistic playboy Tyler Morello.

Elena finally made it to the stage. Massimo handed her the gun. Elena spun its chamber.

As Elena lifted the gun to her head, Massimo stopped her. There’s a tradition you have to do first.
