Audrey's hands clenched into tight fists, her knuckles turning bone white.
She thought she had cried out all her tears for him last night. But hearing him casually dictate what was going to happen to her body, completely disregarding her refusal, felt like a serrated blade sawing through her heart.
Her nose stung, and the familiar heat pricked the back of her eyes.
This was the man she had loved for years. The man she had joyfully married a year ago.
She looked at him, her voice trembling from the effort of keeping her emotions in check. "What exactly am I to you, Joaquin?"
Just last night, she had wondered if he viewed her as less than a dog. Today, every word out of his mouth confirmed it. In his eyes, she wasn't even human.
The air between them grew thick and suffocating. Joaquin stared at her for a long time before answering gravely, "You are my wife."
He knew he had neglected her and failed to be there when she needed him. But moving forward, he intended to step up and be a proper husband.
Audrey let out a bark of laughter, as if it was the funniest joke she'd ever heard. "Your wife? Or just a walking, breathing petri dish you keep around to harvest parts for your true love?"
She laughed so hard a tear slipped down her cheek. "Joaquin, what happens when I tell you I absolutely refuse to be put under? Are you going to drag me to the operating table and strap me down?"
Joaquin's eyes darkened. "Audrey, I've promised you a dozen times, the procedure is safe and won't—"
"Joaquin." Audrey cut him off. Reaching into her bag, she pulled out a heavy, tactical folding knife—a gift from her grandfather for self-defense when she came of age.
