Audrey downed the water and handed the cup back. "He was specifically looking for this?"
"Oh, absolutely," the nurse replied, taking the cup. "It’s a highly specialized medication. If Mr. Foster hadn't personally demanded it, there's no way we could have sourced it on such short notice."
Audrey froze, a sudden rush of warmth flooding her chest, swiftly followed by a wave of disbelief. What had she possibly done to deserve this kind of extreme loyalty from a man she’d only met twice?
"Ma'am." Chase’s impatient voice echoed from the hallway. "The phlebotomist is here. Please don't keep them waiting."
Audrey glanced at her watch. She had swallowed the pill less than two minutes ago.
"If they draw blood before the five-minute mark, will it mess up the results?"
The nurse shook her head. "I honestly don't know, but the specialist specifically stressed a five-minute window."
Audrey bit her lip, desperately trying to buy a few more minutes, but Chase had already flagged down a random woman walking by to check the stalls.
Left with no choice, she admitted defeat, walking out of the restroom and following Chase back to the lounge.
By the time the needle slipped into her vein, she checked the clock. It had only been three minutes since she took the pill.
Watching Chase walk out with the nurse and her blood vials, a heavy knot settled in her stomach.
If it hadn't been a full five minutes... would it still work? And if it didn't... what was she going to do?
"Don't stress over it." Miles, leaning on his crutches, walked her out of the main doors of St. Jude's. "The specialist said five minutes to be perfectly safe, but it's highly likely it was already kicking in around the two or three-minute mark."
Audrey let out a long breath, looking up at the man beside her. "The nurse told me you rushed here first thing this morning specifically to track down that medication..."
Her eyes were brimming with genuine gratitude. "Whether it worked or not, thank you. Seriously. When this is all over, I’m buying you dinner."
"Deal." Seeing the absolute sincerity in her eyes, a warm smile spread across Miles’s face. "But there's no rush. Let's wait until the ink is completely dry on your divorce papers."
