The Moment I Realized I Can't Lose You novel Chapter 70

The sound of Rainey's breathing hitched violently over the speaker. "You... you..."

"What's wrong? Were you about to scream at me, only to remember that I am actually the woman legally married to him?" Audrey leaned back into the plush leather seat, her voice dripping with lethal sarcasm. "For a second there, I thought you'd genuinely forgotten that Joaquin is my husband."

Rainey breathed heavily for a long moment before adopting her signature pathetic, trembling tone. "Audrey, of course I know he's your husband... It's just that my mother has been terribly sick with a high fever all week. My dad has been taking care of her round the clock, so I've been completely alone. I only asked Joaquin to stay because I had no one else..."

"Oh? Aunt Beatrice has had a high fever for an entire week and it still hasn't broken?" Audrey chuckled darkly. "If it's been that long, it sounds fatal. Should I call an ambulance for her? Maybe send her to the ICU for a full-body scan?"

Rainey fell silent, scrambling for a lie. "Well... it hasn't been a full week. She's actually doing much better now..."

"If she's doing better, then your parents should be the ones sitting by your bedside," Audrey cut her off effortlessly. "Keeping a married man living in your hospital room night after night is a terrible look, don't you think? If the paparazzi catch wind of this, the whole internet will be calling you a homewrecker again. Think of your fragile acting career."

Trapped in her own web of excuses, Rainey couldn't utter a single word of defense.

Sensing her total defeat, Audrey's lips curled into a victorious smirk. "Is there anything else you need, Rainey? If not, I suggest you call your daddy to come tuck you in. My husband and I have incredibly important business to attend to tonight, and we are done talking to you."

Without waiting for a response, Audrey hit end and tossed the phone back into Joaquin's lap.

Joaquin stared at the phone, then slowly dragged his eyes up to her face, a glint of genuine fascination in his gaze. "I didn't know you had claws."

In the past, if anyone had dared to speak to Rainey with such venom, he would have destroyed them. But watching Audrey completely dismantle her, he found he didn't want to stop her at all.
