The packs outcast Luna (Kaia and Theo) novel Chapter 37

Chapter 37

–Kaia–

After my shift I had barely stepped out of the clinic when I saw her.

I saw Cara waiting near the entrance.

She’s probably here to ambush me.

Perfect.

Theo’s stepmother stood with her arms folded across her chest.

The moment she saw me, her posture shifted, expression tighter than her immaculate bun.

She didn’t even bother starting with a greeting.

But I didn’t mind.

But I do know, she’s not here for chats and giggles.

Cara looked at me. “Kaia. We need to talk.”

I stopped a few feet away from her.

I raised my head, looking at her.

Calm. Neutral, trying not to feel intimidated.

“Okay. Talk, I’m listening.” I replied.

Cara scanned me up and down as if she was checking for fleas on me.

She looked disgusted. Unimpressed.

“First, I want to acknowledge what you did for the king. You saved his life and for that, I’m… grateful.” Cara says, glaring at me.

I almost laughed.

Cara sounded like someone being forced at gunpoint to say thank you.

It wasn’t funny but I could sense where this was going.

Cara continued before I could respond.

“But gratitude isn’t enough reason for me to risk this pack. You were a stray when you came here, and a stray carries danger we cannot predict.”

There it was the real purpose.

I raised a brow.

“Is this going somewhere?” I asked.

Cara’s lips tightened.

“Yes.” Cara firmly nodded. “The council, the elders, and I have come to a decision. A decision regarding Theo’s Luna.”

“Elara will be Luna. She’s from our pack, she’s trained, she’s aligned with us. And I won’t have you…” She gestured vaguely at my existence. “…interfering.”

I blinked slowly. Then, I faced her seriously.

“And how exactly is that any of my business?”

Cara froze. “Excuse me?”

“Yes,” I repeated. “Why exactly would I be involved? Theo’s personal decisions aren’t my business.”

Cara was still looking at me, I stepped forward slightly.

“I’m not auditioning to be Luna. I never asked for that title, never wanted it. So if you’re worried I’m somehow standing in the way of Elara… that’s a you problem, not mine.”

Cara’s nostrils flared. Then a smile flickered on her lips.

“Good. Then stay in your place.” Cara muttered, gritting her teeth.

I let out a soft, humorless laugh. “With all due respect, I don’t have a ‘place’ you decide for me.”

That hit. Cara’s expression snapped.

“You’re awfully bold for a stray. No family. No pack. Charity taken in by my son’s good heart.” She sneered at

Her eyes swept me like dirt on her shoe. “You’re a stray. A lost girl who got lucky.”

My jaw flexed once but I didn’t break eye contact.

“Maybe. But I’m still a member of Shadowclaw now. Officially. And I won’t let anyone treat me like dirt. Not even you.”

Cara’s eyes widened, probably not used to someone pushing back.

“A Shadowclaw? In your dreams, Kaia” she chuckled.

I’m Shadowclaw. That’s what your Alpha decided. If you have a problem, take it up with him” I retorted.

Cara stiffened, taken aback.

Cara’s face twisted. “You don’t know your place.”

“Maybe it’s time this pack learns mine.”

“You don’t know what you’re doing” Gritting, Cara mumbled. “You don’t want to get on my bad record”

“I’ve survived worse than your disapproval. So if you came here hoping to bully me into disappearing…” I tilted her head. “You picked the wrong stray.”

Cara’s face flushed with anger.

She’s probably shocked. Felt insulted, thrown off by a stray.

“You have no idea who you’re talking to.” Cara says.

“No. I know exactly who I’m talking to.” I gave a tiny, satisfied smile. “The problem is… you’re not used to someone talking back.”

“How dare you? You stupid stray!” Cara hissed, her face red with anger.

“And so what if I’m a stray, why are you so threatened?” I asked.

That stunned Cara for a bit.

She looked at me and didn’t say anything.

Clearly furious by my audacity and want nothing more than to rip my hair out.

Cara hissed, bitterly. “Shadowclaw gave you charity —”

I shrugged. “Then I guess you shouldn’t have. Because I’m not leaving anytime soon”

“You stupid bitch!” Cara seethes. “We’ll see how long that lasts.”

Cara spun on her heel and walked away, furious.

She was hitting the ground so hard as if she wanted me to see how angry she was.

I just stood there, watching her leave.

Once she was gone, I exhaled, my shoulders relaxing.

For the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel small.

I felt… like the old me.

And completely unafraid.

When I returned to the packhouse.

I went straight to my chamber. I pushed the door shut with my shoulder, more forcefully than I intended to.

Maliya glanced up from making the bed, her eyes immediately narrowing.

“Don’t give me that face,” she said. “What happened?”

I exhaled sharply. “Nothing I can’t handle.”

She raised a brow. “So… someone tried to bully you again?”

I stiffened. “I said I’m fine.”

Maliya stopped making the bed and crossed her arms.

“Kaia, you came back here looking like you’re ready to set the whole pack house on fire. Don’t make me crack my brains. Tell me❞

My jaw clenched so hard it hurt.

I turned away, staring at the window, but the words slipped anyway.

“I’m not here to steal anything from them.”

Maliya paused.

“Ah,” she said softly. “So someone accused you of stealing”

I swallowed, heat crawling up my throat.

“His stepmother decided to ‘warn’ me about staying in my place. As if I’m clawing for a position I never asked for.”

Maliya let out a breath and stepped closer.

“Kaia…” She touched my arm. “You did the right thing by not bowing to her.”

“She called me a stray,” I whispered, the sting of it still fresh. “Like I’m dirt they picked up off the road.”

“And you reminded her you’re a Shadowclaw now,” Maliya said firmly. “Good.”

I finally looked at her. She held my gaze.

Steady, loyal, unflinching.

“Don’t let them scare you,” she said. “Not here. Not anymore.”

My throat tightened at the unexpected warmth of it.

Not pity. Not fear.

Just… belief.

Maliya smiled. “Anytime. Now sit. I’ll get you something hot before you punch a wall and break your hand.”

Despite myself, I laughed, just a little.

But the anger wasn’t gone.
