The Shadowclaw courtyard was unusually quiet this morning, a little too quiet.
I had barely stepped out of the training field when I spotted someone jogging toward me.
Alisha, the young warrior-in-training I had helped out a few times. She usually greeted me with a wide grin and endless chatter.
But today, her smile was gone.
Instead, her eyes darted nervously around us, and her breathing was uneven as she skidded to a stop.
“Kaia,” she whispered urgently, grabbing my hand. “Come with me. Please.”
I blinked. “Alisha? What’s wrong?”
Aliaha didn’t answer. She grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward a narrow side passage wedged between the
barracks.
A place only used when someone didn’t want to be overheard.
Alisha checked both ends of the alley twice and when she didn’t see anyone else, she finally exhaled.
“I didn’t want you to hear this from someone else,” she said. “But… something is happening.”
I frowned. “What do you
mean?”
Alisha bit her lip and looked almost guilty.
“There are things being said around the pack.”
My heartbeat faltered. “About me?”
A sad, reluctant nod.
I scoffed softly. “What now? That I breathe wrong? That I walk wrong? That I’m somehow a threat by existing?”
But Alisha didn’t laugh. She didn’t find it funny.
“That’s the thing,” she murmured. “I don’t believe any of it. And I don’t think anyone close to you does either. But others? They might.”
I stared at her. “Alisha… what exactly are they saying?”
Alisha hesitated, long enough for me to understand it was something bad.

“I don’t want to repeat it,” Alisha whispered, her voice shaking. “And I think it will hurt more if it comes from me. Just… be careful today. Watch how people look at you. And don’t react, that’s what they want.”
My chest tightened. “They?”
Alisha stepped closer, lowering her voice even more.
“You already know who doesn’t want you here. Who wants the spot beside Alpha Theo.” Her expression darkened. “And when power is involved… people lie without shame.”
I inhaled sharply. I understood what she meant immediately.
Elara. Cara. Someone had stirred things up and the ripples were already spreading.
“Thank you for telling me,” I said quietly, forcing strength into my voice.
Alisha squeezed my hand. “Whatever they’re planning… you’re not alone, Kaia. I’m right here.”
I nodded. “I know.Alisha. Thank you”
I nodded, but as Alisha walked off to rejoin training, a cold knot twisted in my stomach.
Because I could already feel it. The shift, the way everyone is staring at me.
And I hadn’t even heard the rumour yet.
***
I felt something was off the moment I stepped into the packhouse after training.
The pack members fell silent when I walked past.
Only staring at me as if they were seeing me for the first time.
Some whispered behind their half-covered mouths while stealing glances at me.
While others didn’t bother hiding the disgust in their eyes.
Maliya practically ran up to me.
“Kaia,” she whispered urgently, grabbing my wrist. “Someone has been spreading things about you.”
I blinked. “What things?”
She swallowed hard. “That you… bewitched Alpha Theo.”
My stomach twisted. “What?”
“That you seduced him.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “That you used rogue herbs to manipulate his emotions and get into his bed.”

I just… stared.
:
Bewitched? Manipulated?
Into his bed?
“What the hell-“I began, but Maliya cut me off.
“There’s more.”
Of course there was.

“They’re saying you only pretended to save the King to gain power.” Maliya whispered, catching her breaths.” They also claimed you’re trying to replace Elara as Luna. And you… have a history of sleeping with Alpha- ranked men to climb higher.”
Maliya didn’t look at me after saying this. Afraid, I’d get mad at her.
I felt heat rise up my throat-not embarrassment.
Rage.
Searing, white-hot, blinding rage.
“And who started these rumors?” I asked quietly.
Maliya didn’t answer. She didn’t need to.
Elara.
Perfect, poisonous Elara.
And the fact that wolves believed this so quickly?
That stung more than the lie itself.
“I’m going to my chamber,Maliya. Don’t let anyone disturb me”
I tried to keep to myself all afternoon, but I had some work to do.
I left my room but the whispers burned behind me every step I took.
When I finally walked into the pack grounds, the stares were worse.
A group of female warriors blocked my path.
Their leader crossed her arms, glaring like she’d caught me committing murder.
“So,” she drawled, “which Alpha are you planning to sleep with next?”
My spine snapped straight.

“I don’t know what you’ve been told,” I said evenly, “but-”

“Oh, we know,” she cut me off. “Everyone knows. The truth of everything is right in front of us.”
My pulse froze.
Elara.
Before I could speak again, the door swung open.
Theo walked in.
And every single woman turned to stare at him.
Then at me. Then back at him.
Perfect.
Exactly the trap Elara set for me.
I look guilty simply by standing here.
Theo frowned, picking up on the tension.
“What’s going on?”
One warrior smirked. “Just the stray explaining why she’s been bewitching ranked-men to climb higher”
A sharp silence fell.
My cheeks heated-not with shame, but fury.
Theo’s eyes snapped to mine, confused, defensive, ready to tear through anyone.
But it didn’t matter.
The rumor had done its job. Exactly what Elara wanted.
Now,there’s nothing I would say that wouldn’t appear as guilt in front of them.
I turned away before Theo could say anything.
Before he could try to defend me. Which I think would make matters worse.
I walked out of there afraid I’d explode at the wrong person.
Because defending myself here would only make me look guilty.
Denying it would make it seem true. And fighting back would make me seem an unstable stray.
Exactly how they think of me; an unstable stray, Alpha Theo took pity on.

Chapter 40
Elara didn’t need claws or a crown to hurt me.
All she had to do was stir up whispers.
I walked out of the pack grounds silently, my pulse thundering.
Clenching my fists to keep my breath steady. But inside?
Inside, something dark unfurled.
If Elara wanted a war… she should’ve picked someone weaker.
