I knew coming here was a mistake.

But I kept walking-straight into the one place an Alpha shouldn’t be when his mind is raging like wildfire.
One he can’t put out.
The bar was packed. Wolves everywhere.
The place smells of liquor, sweat and perfume.
Voices layered over each other like buzzing gnats.
The music was loud and people were dancing, twirling in each other’s arms.
But none of them mattered.
My head was thundering too loud.
Kaia’s voice had me in a chokehold.
My mind drifted to Kaia turning away from me at the pack grounds.
Heck, she wouldn’t even look at me.
I don’t know where I went wrong with Kaia. How things got so heated between us.
I wish she would just listen to me. Just once.
I downed my fifth drink. Or sixth glass. I lost count.
The burn didn’t hit fast enough.
I slammed the glass down harder than necessary, and the bartender flinched.
“Another,” I said.
“Alpha, that’s-”
“Did I ask for a lecture?”
He poured it immediately.
I dragged a hand through my hair, gripping the back of my neck. My wolf paced inside my chest, restless.
Agitated.

Chapter 43
:
Searching for her. Someone he could never have
I hated it.
I hated how my entire body reacted to one girl who didn’t even know what she meant to me.
“She’s just a stray, Theo.”
“She doesn’t belong here, Theo.”
“Listen to me, she’s in trouble..”
Cara’s annoying voice replayed in my head, scratching at something raw.
I took another burning mouthful.
I pressed my fingers against my temples. “Gods.”
A woman slipped onto the stool beside me. Then another. Then a third.
They always recognized me-even outside the packhouse. Alpha or not, drunk or not.

Three of them looked like they were on a mission. They always sensed weakness, or pain, or whatever I was radiating tonight.
Alpha Theo,” one of them purred, leaning close enough for me to choke on her perfume. “Didn’t expect to see you here tonight.”
The second one had her hand trailing up my arm.
“Pain looks good on you,” she whispered against my ear.
“You look stressed. Rough night?” another whispered. “We could… help.”
Hands grazed my arm. My thighs. My shoulder.
I jerked away. “Don’t.”
They giggled like they thought I was being playful.
I wasn’t.
“You don’t have to be alone,” one said, pressing her body to my chest.
Their scents clashed-Overwhelmingly sweet, sharp, spicy.
Nothing smelled like her.
I pushed them back. “Not tonight.”
One of them touched my jaw. “We promise we can make you forget whoever-”

Chapter 43
“Don’t touch me.”
They froze.
The entire bar went still for a second because my voice didn’t sound like mine.
It sounded like my wolf was one breath from breaking out.

I pushed away from the counter, a little too fast. The floor tilted. I grabbed the edge of the bar, swearing under my breath.
Great,I was drunk.
The Alpha of Shadowclaw reduced to this.
The bartender stepped back, eyes widening. Probably fearing the wrath of an unbalanced Alpha.
Then I heard the last voice I wanted, but needed.
“Unbelievable,” Zane muttered as he pushed through the crowd. “Theo, of all places, you came here?”
The three women instantly brightened. “Beta Zane-”
“No,” he said flatly. “All of you, move away.”
They scattered away awkwardly.
Zane stared at me, arms crossed. “You’re drunk.”
“I’m…” I hiccupped. “-hydrated.”
“Come on,” he said, grabbing my arm. “You’re done here.”
I yanked my arm back. “I’m not.”
“Yes, you are.” he rolled his eyes. “Let’s
go
home”
“Not now. I need more drinks,” I snapped. “Bartender, get me one more”
“Theo, stop this” Zane tried to grab me.
“Wait,” I muttered, grabbing his sleeve clumsily. “I… need to tell you something.”
He sighed but helped me sit again. “Fine. Tell me.”
I stared at the empty glass in front of me, trying to collect the pieces of my head.
“It’s Elara,” I finally said.
Zane stiffened. “What about her?”

“Why did she come back?” I whispered. “We were happy once… I thought we were. Then she left without a reason. Without a goodbye.”
The memory stabbed my rib.
He didn’t interrupt.
“And now she shows up pretending nothing happened.” My voice cracked. “And everyone wants me to make her Luna like it’s the logical thing. Like she didn’t break me.”
“She wants the Luna position like it belonged to her. Like she didn’t walk away the first time”
Zane was quiet for a long breath. “You’re not in love with her anymore.”
“I know,” I said. “That’s the problem.”
He leaned forward. “Then who do you want?”
The answer rushed out before I could catch it.
“Kaia.
The truth spilled out of me uncontrollably.
“I can’t stop thinking about her.” I whispered. “She has me wrapped around her fingers. She makes everything… brighter. Gods, Zane, I try to keep my distance but I’m failing.”
Zane didn’t look surprised. He just exhaled slowly.
“She’s in my damn head.” I dragged a hand over my face.
“She’s not even trying to help,” I said miserably. “She’s running from me. She thinks she’s trouble. Elara’s back and everything is-” I choked. “Everything is wrong now.”
My chest aches. “And I’m losing grip on everything. All at once.”
Zane clapped my back. “At least you finally said it.”
“Yeah,” I muttered, head dropping forward. “Too bad the only person who doesn’t know… is Kaia.”
“I want her,” I said, my voice breaking. “I want Kaia. And I’m terrified I’m going to ruin her life simply by wanting her.”
Zane tightened his hold. “You’re drunk. But you’re not lying.”
“No,” I whispered. “For once, I’m not.”
Zane stood and pulled me up. “Then let’s sober you up before you say all this to the wrong person.”
I let him drag me out of the bar.

Chapter 43
I was feeling drunk, almost stumbling.
Despite being heartbroken. One thing is true.
And the truth is Kaia wasn’t just in my head anymore.
She had my whole damn heart.
