I knew Theo was in trouble the second my phone buzzed at midnight.
Not from him- – of course not.
Theo never called when he was spiraling.
It was the bartender.
“Beta Zane? Your Alpha is here… He’s not okay.”
This told me everything I needed to know.
Great.
Just what I needed after a fourteen-hour shift.
I groaned, grabbed my jacket, and headed straight to the bar, already preparing myself for whatever disaster he’d created.
When I walked in, I spotted him immediately.
And sure enough, there he was – the mighty Alpha of Shadowclaw.
Theo was sitting in a corner, one hand in his hair, the other wrapped around a half-empty glass, staring at nothing.
A few women hovered around him. Giggling, and touching his shoulder like he was a snack on display.
I swore under my breath.
“Everybody back up,” I snapped as I approached. “Show’s over.”
“Zane,” he slurred, blinking too slowly. “Why’re there… two of you?”
“There aren’t,” I muttered. “Unless you hit your head. Which would explain a lot.”
Theo looked up at me with the most pathetic drunk frown I’d ever seen.
“Zane,” he muttered. “I’m fine.”
“Sure,” I said dryly. “And I’m the Moon Goddess.”
He glared. Or tried to. It looked more like he was squinting at a blurry menu.
“I’m fine,” he repeated, raising the glass again.

Chapter 44
I snatched it away before he could drink.
He blinked. “Hey-”
“You’ve had enough,” I said. “Let’s get you home.”
He laughed. Then immediately it looked like he wanted to cry.
Oh fantastic. He was in that stage.
“Not now” Theo shook his head. “I need more drinks”
I couldn’t stop him.
Then I noticed his phone lying on the table.
Unlocked. His call log was open.
I saw Kaia’s name at the top.
Six attempts.
I whistled low. “Damn. You really are gone.”
Theo groaned and rubbed his face. “I needed to tell her something.”
“What? That you’re an idiot? I’m sure she already knows.”
He kicked my shin under the table. I dodged and he missed completely.
I dragged him out of the booth. “Come on.”
Theo stumbled against me, mumbling. “Kaia…”
“Yeah, yeah. You’ll see her soon”
“No,” he slurred. “I don’t think I will. She hates me.”
“You hate you,” I corrected. “She doesn’t.”
He stopped walking and grabbed my arm, eyes suddenly sharp even through the haze.
“Zane … she’s… she’s different.” His voice cracked. “She feels like something I can’t lose.”
I sighed deeply. Here we go.
“And Elara showing up just-” He choked out a bitter laugh. “It messed everything up. Again.”.
“That’s what she does,” I said, tugging him forward.
“I don’t want her,” Theo said suddenly, loudly, hands balling at his sides.

Chapter 44
“I don’t want Elara. I haven’t wanted her for a long damn time.”
People were staring.
Great.
“And Kaia?” I asked.
Theo stared at the ground. At his feet and fists.
Anywhere but me.
“She got under my skin,” he whispered. “Before I even noticed.”
My chest tightened a little – not that I’d ever admit it.
Theo only got like this when he was hurting.
“Then tell her,” I said.
“I tried!” he snapped. “She didn’t answer.”
“Because you’re drunk,” I deadpanned.
His eyes widened. “Oh. Then I should call her again.”

“Nope.” I grabbed his phone before he could. “Unless you want to wake up tomorrow and find out you confessed your undying love through slurred voice notes.”
Theo looked genuinely horrified. “Zane…”
“Yes?”
“….did I already do that?”
I checked the screen.
One unsent voice note. Five seconds long.
I pressed play. Theo’s voice came out broken, desperate:
“Kaia… please.”
I locked the phone immediately.
Theo exhaled shakily. “I’m screwed.”
“Absolutely,” I agreed. “Now shut up and walk before I drag you.”
He had one more drink before he let me drag him out of the bar.

He huffed but followed, leaning heavily on me.
When I strapped the seatbelt around him. Theo couldn’t stop sulking.

“Kaia has my heart,” he confessed, broken, honest in a way he’d never admit sober. “I didn’t mean for it to happen. I swear I didn’t.”
He laughed a little, shaking his head.
“She just… got in. Even when I told myself she wouldn’t.”
I didn’t say anything.
I didn’t need to.
Then he grabbed my arm – surprisingly strong for someone who could barely see straight.
“I have to tell her,” he said. “Tonight. Call Kaia. Give me my phone. I have to. I have to tell her everything before she thinks I’m choosing Elara.”
Oh mahn.
“You should absolutely not call her,” I countered immediately. “You’re drunk, and dramatic.”
“I’m not dramatic,” he argued.
I passed him the phone because honestly, trying to argue with a drunk Theo is a waste of time. He wouldn’t listen anyways.
He tried to unlock the phone several times. Keying on the wrong passcode.
It finally worked.
Then he hit call.
I dragged my hand over my face. Exhausted. “Theo. You’re too much”
The phone rang once. Twice. Three times.
Theo’s heart beat harder with each one.
“Come on…” hw whispered. “Pick up. Just pick up.”
She didn’t pick up.
Then the call dropped to voicemail.
He stared at his screen, the rejection sharper than it should’ve been.
I look at him not knowing what to say.

Chapter 44
I can’t say exactly what he wants to hear.
“I hurt her,” he muttered. “I didn’t mean to. I should’ve told her everything. I should’ve told her-”
“Told her what?” I asked carefully.
I saw his eyes burned.
He blinked repeatedly “That she… that she…”
The words stuck in his throat. He stuttered, trying to get it out.
I grip his shoulder tighten. “Theo.”
“…that she’s the only damn thing that makes sense to me anymore.”
“I’m sure she hates me,” he murmured.
“No. Kaia is asleep,” I corrected.
He ignored me and kept dialing.
Soon, he stopped dialing, his head fell back against the seat, eyes slipping shut.
“One more,” he whispered. “I’ll tell her in the morning…”
But he didn’t finish his sentence before he slip out.
He was out cold.
I stared at him for a moment, the great Alpha, reduced to a heartbroken mess.
I exhaled. I know that feeling.
“Yeah,” I muttered. “Tomorrow. Good luck with that.”
