I felt eyes on me when I stirred in my sleep. It felt like someone was watching but not in a weird way.

I opened my eyes and found Theo already awake, propped on one elbow, staring at me like I might disappear if he blinked too hard.

I squinted at him.

I groaned. “Why are you looking at me like that? Is there something on my face? Should I be scared?”

His lips twitched, then curved into a soft, almost disbelieving smile.

“No. Nothing’s wrong. I’m happy.” Theo answered.

I frowned harder.

“That’s suspicious,” I muttered, teasing him.

He chuckled, brushing his thumb along my jaw.

“I can’t believe my luck.” Theo looked at me with disbelief.

I shifted closer, teasing.

I chuckled a little. “You won, Alpha. You survived the night. barely getting any sleep at all”.

“You’re impossible,” he said, kissing my hand.

“Says the man who didn’t sleep and is now staring at me like I’m a miracle.”

His expression softened again, serious in that way that made my chest tighten.

“Because you are, Kaia,” Theo said, his eyes filled with emotion.

I rolled my eyes, but I was smiling.

“You look way too serious for someone who spent the whole night very… distracted.”

Theo chuckled hearing me tease him.

“That’s slander against the Alpha!”

I laughed, brushing my fingers across his chest, feeling his heartbeat beneath my palm.

It was there, beating strongly.

Theo leaned down, resting his forehead against mine.

“Kaia,” his eyes fell on me. “I like waking up like this.”

The words settled into me quietly.

:

Theo pulled me close, hugging me tightly against his chest.

I felt so safe in his arms.

Suddenly, I felt Theo’s body language change. It was subtle, but I felt that familiar weight returning to his shoulders.

I sat up slightly. “What is it?”

He hesitated, then exhaled. There’s something I need to tell you.

My stomach tightened. I straightened fully now.

“You’re scaring me,” I muttered. You look like you’re about to confess to murder. Relax a little, Theo”

“Kaia-”

“I’m joking. Go on.” I chuckled.

“I’ve been trying to tell you this for weeks now. But, I didn’t get a chance to” Theo began “I extended an alliance to someone”

That snapped me awake completely.

I pushed myself upright. “An alliance? With who?”

He didn’t look away. “To Draven.

For a second, my mind went blank.

“Draven? Why would you- Theo, that’s not a small decision?”

Theo reached for my hand, grounding me.

“I know exactly what it means. Kaia”

“Then explain it to me.” I urged him, my mind flickering.

His thumb brushed over my knuckles, slow and deliberate.

“Because after everything that’s been done to you… everything that was taken, twisted, used against you-” His jaw tightened. “I’m not letting it stand. They won’t get away with it”

I swallowed. “You don’t need to start wars for me.”

“I’m not starting one.” He leaned closer, his voice firm. “I’m ending what they started long ago”

I searched his face, he was serious about this.

“You’re doing this to avenge me. Aren’t you?” I asked.

Theo didn’t deny it.

:

“I’m doing this because no one touches what’s mine and walks away unscarred”

My chest ached at the word mine.

And what if it makes things worse?” I shuddered, thinking of this.

Theo firmly said. “Then I’ll handle that too.”

He cupped my cheek, forcing me to meet his eyes.

“Kaia, I’m going to make everyone who had a hand in hurting you pay dearly. No matter what it takes”

My voice came out quieter than I intended.

“You don’t have to do everything all by yourself, Theo”

He pressed his forehead to mine again.

“I know. That’s why I told you first. I’m not doing this alone, you’ll be informed every step of the way”

I exhaled slowly, then nodded.” Then we face whatever comes… together.”

“But the alliance isn’t sealed yet” Theo said. “Nothing’s official. So, I don’t have ties to his pack yet.”

I muttered. “Oh,”

His grip tightened just slightly.

I’m not doing anything recklessly. I’m doing it deliberately. And I wanted you to know before anything else happens.”

My heart stuttered. I hugged him, taking in his scent.

“Thank you… for telling me. For choosing me first.

His shoulders eased, relief flickering across his face.

He kissed my forehead. “I will always choose you first, Kaia. Always.”

Then, he pulled me in for a wet kiss.

I had barely stepped into the hallway after stepping out of Theo’s room when I saw her.

Cara.

She was leaning against a pillar, staring directly into my eyes like she was cementing her authority on me.

She curled her lips already in disgust with her gaze dragged over me, quietly judging me even before she opened her mouth.

“Well. That didn’t take long.” Cara said, mockingly.

I stopped walking.

Cara scoffed. “I must admit, I didn’t expect you to climb into the Alpha’s bed so quickly. Or maybe that’s just… how you are.”

My jaw tightened, but I kept my voice calm.

“Good morning to you too. Queen Cara, is there something I can help you with?”

She scoffed. “Don’t play innocent with me. You managed to charm your way into Theo’s bed, and the pack’s hearts. I suppose I should congratulate you.”

I crossed my arms. “You seem very invested in where I sleep.”

Her eyes flashed.

“I wonder if this is how you behaved in your previous pack. Is that why you ended up packless?” she smirked cunningly.” Surely, because you have no concept of shame and loyalty”

Her words hit me in my guts but I refused to let it show.

“Careful. You’re making a lot of assumptions for someone who wasn’t there.” I warned.

Cara stepped closer, her voice dropping.

“You may have succeeded in fooling the pack members. You may have fooled Theo. But don’t think for a second you can fool me.”

I met her stare head-on, and we glared at each other for a minute or two.

“I don’t need to fool anyone. Least of all you.” I retort.

She laughed coldly. “You really think you belong here?”

“I know I do.” I answered, “I will become the luna of this pack soon and there is nothing you can do about it”

Her smile vanished when she heard this.

I turned to leave but I stopped myself and turned back to look at her.

“And for the record, Queen Cara” Theo didn’t choose me because of some tricks I played on him. He chose me because he wanted to.”

I leaned in just enough to make my point clear. “That must bother you a lot, unfortunately.”

I straightened. “I have more than you think. And unlike you, I don’t need to tear others down to feel important.”

For a moment, she looked like she might strike me.

Then she smiled, face looking tight and venomous.

“Enjoy it while it lasts,” Cara said, smiling.

“Oh, I plan to,” I said, “you should take your own advice, Queen Cara”

I stepped past her without another word.

Whatever game she thought she was playing, I wasn’t backing down from playing either.
