Chapter 74
Chapter 74
:
The car stopped in front of the mansion.
The cold slapped my face as the vehicle came to a stop.

I didn’t speak throughout the entire drive, my mind was filled with the thoughts of the Alpha lord’s proposal.
I know how ambitious the Alpha lord is and he won’t stop until he gets his hands on the nightshade pack, which I think is impossible.
They are a large pack with a strong army and resources.
I have to think carefully if I want to secure my pack and my people.
Before I got down, I turned to my beta.
“Run a quiet check,” I told my Beta. “Be discreet about it, we don’t want to alert James that we are running background checks behind his back”
He nodded immediately. “On Nightshade?”
“Yes. Start there. Then trace who benefits if they fall.”
“We know a lot of people will benefit if they fall,” my beta said. “They are the largest pack after all”
“But why would they attack the three packs in the west, it doesn’t make any sense” I muttered.
I tapped my finger on the car, trying to understand what was going on.
“Me too,” Rowan chimed in. “I have never heard about the Nightshade pack attacking anyone before, especially not a defenceless village pack like those in the West”
I pinched my temple.
Then, I remember what my father told me about the Nightshade pack a year before he stepped down as alpha and went on a trip or should I say world tour with my mother.
He said the Nightshade pack doesn’t go after other packs, but they don’t back away from a fight.
After the alpha of Nightshade suffered a tragedy years ago, he has become more determined to protect his people.
“What do you think is the truth?” I asked. “If the Western packs were attacked and the Nightshade pack wasn’t behind it, then who?”
“I get a feeling that someone is framing them for something they didn’t do” Rowan reasoned.
I glanced at him, then nodded, slightly agreeing with him.

Chapter 74
The Nightshade pack is anything but a bully.
I hope I’m wrong, I can’t afford to get into a bad situation with them.
At the same time, I can’t offend the alpha lord.
He’s ruthless when he wants something and he doesn’t care who gets hurt in the end.

I have something to say,” Rowan drew my attention back. “It might seem weird but it’s just a thought that occurred to me”
“Go ahead with it.” I said and he nodded.
“What if the alpha lord is behind the attacks?” Rowan asked glancingly at me. “I mean think about it”
“Who stands to gain the most if anything happens and the South falls? Alpha James Vance”
My brows knitted in confusion, I couldn’t get what Rowan was aiming at.
“Why would the alpha lord need to attack the western packs for any reason?”
“Think about it,” Rowan urged. “We all know how much the alpha lord wants to own and rule the biggest pack in the country. When he succeeded in driving away that monster, Alpha lord Calculus, who was going after the packs trying to occupy and expand his territory, he thought he would own the biggest pack”
“Turns out a lot of the terrorised territories chose to align with the Nightshade pack instead. Since they were victims of Alpha Calculus’ evil ways, they helped them when they needed it the most”
“I doubt the Nightshade pack will go after helpless and vulnerable packs”
“This is all speculation, Rowan” I muttered once Rowan stopped talking. “There is no evidence to support this. Moreover, why would he ask for my help if he did the attacking?”
“He wasn’t asking for your help, Draven” Rowan reminded. “He was presenting you with a side to choose from”
I fell silent thinking over his words, he wasn’t wrong.
But I’m stuck now, between choosing sides.
Silence stretched between us.
“It’s better to align with the Nightshade, they are not evil like the alpha lord, who’s clearly after power and riches” Rowan advises and I raise my head.
“We will decide after we find out exactly what’s going on” I said and got out of the car. “Keep this between us, carry out the investigation as quickly as possible”
“Alright Alpha,” Rowan said and parked the car.
“But keep in mind, if the alpha lord moves,” my Beta said carefully, “others will follow.”

Chapter 74
“I know.”
Which meant I had to decide fast.
If I refuse without a reason, I’ll look weak in front of all the other northern pack.
And if I accept, and step into a war, just like that, I’d be endangering my people.
I walked into the house, my mind still bugged by everything.
The omegas approached me to collect my jacket.
“Where is the Luna?” I asked, handing her my jacket.
“She’s having dinner in the hall,” the omega replied, lowering her gaze.
My thoughts drifted to Liora.

She’d been too calm lately. She has stepped into Kaia’s shoes, helping with running the pack’s daily activities.
But lately, I noticed she has been too pleased with things going her way.
I went to the hall to see my Luna, and she was happy to see me too.
“Oh darling, you came at the right time” Liora excitedly said, and I sat down with her. “Would you like a plate?”
“No, I’m full,” I refused, and truly I had a lot to drink at the party. I can’t eat anymore. “You look happy, what’s going on?”
“I have good news,” Liora stopped eating and stared at me, smiling.
“Tell me,” for some reason I was eager for what she had to say.
“Seraphine and I were just talking,” she glanced over at the healer, who now frequently visits the pack mansion. “She confirmed it today. Our pup will be born in less than two months”
“Honey, that’s such good news,” I stood up and kissed her lips. She kissed me right back. “What do we need to do before he’s born?”
I looked at her, carefully studying her face.
Liora was glowing heavily, I should have known our pup was ready to come out.
Our pup, we are going to become parents.
“There’s a lot to do, I can’t think” Liora said, she looked cute, acting like a confused mom.
I nodded once. “Then we don’t have time to waste. Let’s get started.”
Her eyes lifted to mine. “That’s all you have to say?”

I moved closer, lowering myself onto her. “It’s not a small thing, Liora. Everything changes after the pup is born. We need to look after a little pup, we need to be prepared”
A faint smile curved her lips. “You’re already thinking like a father.”
“Like an Alpha,” I corrected.
She didn’t argue.
“We have a lot to do but first, let’s make the baby a pathway” Liora winked at me, and I understood what she meant. “Don’t you agree?”
“Is it safe?” I asked, worried we might hurt the baby.
“It’s pretty safe, Seraphine said It helps with safe delivery”
“I will be in our room,” I said, getting up to leave. “Finish dinner, I’m waiting for you”
I was halfway up the stairs when Liora’s voice floated after me.
“And oh, honey,”
I stopped but didn’t turn yet.
“There’s a letter for you,” she said, coming closer. “From Shadowclaw Pack.”
That made me turn.
“Shadowclaw?” I repeated. “From Alpha Theo?”
She nodded, holding out the letter. “It states he’ll be arriving in two days.”
Two days.
I took the letter and skimmed through it as fast as I could.
It was true, Alpha Theo was coming over in two days but why would he choose to come by himself?
Liora watched my face closely.
“That’s interesting,” she said. “A visit like this… it could be very good for us.”
I folded the letter slowly. “Or very inconvenient.”
She smiled, undeterred. “I was thinking we should host him properly. A feast. Let’s do something impressive. Let the other packs see we’re united.”
“A feast,” I repeated, studying her.
“Yes,” she said smoothly. “Theo is young, but influential. If we welcome him well, it could strengthen future alliances.”

I didn’t miss how quickly she’d said future.
“When did the letter arrive?” I asked.
“This evening,” she replied without hesitation. “While you were out.”

“And you didn’t think to mention it earlier?”
“I wanted to wait until you were relaxed,” she said, stepping closer, fingers brushing my arm. “You’ve been tense lately.”
I looked down at her hand. Then back at her face.
“Tension keeps me alive,” I said flatly.
The smile on her lips disappeared for a second.
“I’ll decide how we receive Theo,” I continued. “Not you.”
Her lips pressed together, but she recovered quickly. “Of course. I only wanted to help.”
“I know,” I said.
“And Liora?” I added without turning back.
“Yes?”
“We can’t afford unnecessary displays, and please no guests beyond what I approve.”
Liora paused, looking at me intently. “…Understood.”
On one side, the alpha lord was trying to drag me into a war and on the other, a powerful pack like Shadowclaw was trying to align itself with mine.
If things go well, the alpha lord won’t be able to force me into a war anymore.
With Alpha Theo Ashford on my side, avoiding conflict with both the alpha lord and the Nightshade would be a piece of cake.
