Chapter 94

“Hold on, I need to recheck her,” Seira said and turned to me.

Seira came to me, looked into my eyes and I saw her fingers trembling, not out of fear, but recognition, when she pressed lightly over my sternum.

I flinched, a sharp gasp tearing out of my throat.

Zane stepped forward immediately.

“What is it? What’s hurting her?”

Seira inhaled slowly, her expression tightening into something I couldn’t read.

“This is not a physical injury,” she said quietly.

Zane froze with his eyes glued to me, Justine’s eyes widened.

I blinked, many questions ran through my mind. “Then what-”

Seira lifted my hand gently, turning my palm upward.

A faint gold shimmer pulsed beneath the skin, so subtle it could’ve been missed unless someone knew what to look for.

Zane’s breath left him in a rush. “That… that looks like..”

“It’s dormant,” Seira whispered. “Barely there. It looks like an echo of emptiness.”

I frowned. “I don’t understand. What are you talking about?”

Seira looked into my eyes with a soft, sympathetic, but troubled glare.

“This is the signature of a bond.”

I recoiled as if struck by something unexpectedly.

“No. No, that’s impossible.”

Justine covered her mouth. Zane swore under his breath.

“It isn’t fully formed… or broken. It’s fragile. Strained. And that strain is what caused your collapse.”

I shook her head violently, panic rising in my chest.

“That’s not possible. I don’t have a mate. That bond was severed-” She stopped myself.

Zane’s gaze sharpened. “Kaia. What aren’t you telling us?”

Seira laid a calming hand on my shoulder.

“You’re not dying. But your heart and your wolf are both reacting to something. Or someone.”

Zane clenched his fists. “Is it Theo?”

Justine stared at me, terrified of my answer.

I looked away, unsure what to say to them. I had no idea what was happening.

“I don’t know.”

Seira exhaled, patting my shoulder. “You need rest. And Beta Zane, ” She looked at him gravely. “She shouldn’t be left alone. Someone needs to stay with her right now.”

“I have to look into this matter deeply to get to the bottom of this and know how to help her”

Zane nodded, but his jaw was tight with fear and he masked it.

“Okay, come, let me walk you to the door” Zane suggested and took her bag from her.

Once they left, Justine patted my hand, flashing me a smile to calm me down.

“Don’t worry, Kaia, nothing will happen to you. I promise”

“I know,” I nodded, returning her smile.

Then, I lay back while Justine took out a bowl to wipe my forehead, I was a little feverish

My eyes drooped, and I was slipping into a slumber when I heard a familiar voice but I couldn’t hold on.

“What happened to Kaia?,” Kingsley rushed in, almost breathless. He looked mad and worried. “Tell me, how did you get hurt?”

Justine muttered, “Calm down, Alpha Kingsley”

–Kingsley–

I was reviewing reports in my office when Maliya burst in breathing heavily.

She must have run a marathon down here.

She didn’t even knock. Maliya never forgets to knock.

“Alpha-!” Her voice cracked. “It’s Kaia. I mean Lady Kaia. Something’s wrong with her.”

My heart dropped.

I stood instantly. “Where is she?”

“In the Alpha’s chambers, she collapsed earlier. Justine is with her.”

I didn’t wait for more. I pushed past Maliya so fast she stumbled aside.

My chest tightened with fear as I bolted out of my office.

I reached Theo’s room and found Justine kneeling beside the bed, pressing a cool cloth to Kaia’s head.

She looked pale, a little too pale for how she looked when she walked with me this morning.

“Kaia,” I breathed, stepping closer. “What happened to her?”

Justine shook her head. “We don’t know. Maliya found her unconscious.”

My throat felt thick. “Why didn’t anyone tell me earlier?”

“Because,” Justine whispered carefully, “Kaia begged us not to, she didn’t want to make you worry”

I stared at her like the words, I couldn’t say what I wanted to.

“Why… why would she hide this?”

Justine hesitated, then said, “She didn’t want Theo to worry and come back before completing what he went for.”

I closed my eyes for a moment.

Of course, she would think that way. Kaia likes putting everyone else before herself.

Even when she could barely breathe, she was still thinking about others.

“She’s just like his mother…” I muttered subconsciously.

Justine frowned. “His mother?”

I shook my head. “Nothing.”

I sat on the edge of the bed, slowly, afraid the mattress would jolt her awake in pain. I reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face.

“You shouldn’t look like this, little wolf,” I murmured. “Not when Theo finally learned how to smile again.”

Her eyelids fluttered weakly, but she didn’t wake.

A knot formed in my chest.

“This girl…” I whispered. “She walked into our lives with nothing. Without a family or support. And she still worries about everyone but herself.”

Justine touched my arm. “Alpha… we need to know what’s wrong with her”

“Yes! Yes.” My voice was sharper than intended. “Why isn’t the doctor here yet?”

“We called the doctor earlier, he couldn’t diagnose her and referred her to Seira, she came here and told us it had something to do with her mate bond” Justine breathed, she looked frustrated. “She needs some time to investigate”

“What?,” I exclaimed, shock washing over me. “How is that possible?”

Justine just nodded. Fear gripped my heart at the sight of Kaia’s face.

“I promised Theo I’d watch over her,” I said quietly. “And the first moment he leaves, this happens.”

Justine’s expression softened. “It isn’t your fault, Alpha.”

I didn’t answer because it felt like it was.

Kaia whimpered softly in her sleep with pain. I swallowed hard, my heart was breaking to see her like that.

“You’re part

of this family now,” I whispered, my hand trembling over hers. “And I’ll be damned if anything takes you away before Theo gets back.”

“Don’t worry, nothing will happen to Kaia,” Justine assured me.

When I raised my head, I saw Kaia’s face knitted. She looked like she was fighting something in her sleep.

At that moment, I was fighting the urge to send word to Theo immediately.

He deserved to know what was happening to Kaia, I’m sure he wouldn’t like me hiding this from him.

But Kaia’s wishes were holding me back. I know how important the trip was to him, I wouldn’t want to ruin it for him.

She was suffering, and still she protected him.

I rubbed a hand over my face, exhaling deeply.

If I sent word, Theo would abandon everything and rush back.

I know my son, he wouldn’t think twice about leaving everything behind for Kaia; she meant the world to him.

now.

But if I didn’t tell him and something happened to Kaia, Theo would hold this against me.

My throat tightened.

How would I ever face him? How would I live with myself if anything happens to Kaia and Theo isn’t here with her?

I stood and paced the room, my mind was bugging with confusion.

“What are you thinking about, Alpha?” Juatine called out to me.

She had finished wiping her face, so I turned to face her.

“It’s about Theo,” I muttered. “He needs to know what’s happening with Kaia”

“But Kaia, she made me promise not to tell him” Justine reminded me, and I nodded.

“He’s my son,” I muttered under my breath. “My son, and she’s the girl who healed him of everything he went through”

“Sue made him smile again, and he’d fight the entire pack for her. He wouldn’t think twice before laying his life for her.”

I looked at Kaia’s face again. Her face was pale and covered in cold sweat.

“This isn’t fair,” I whispered. “It isn’t fair to them both”

“I know, Alpha,” Justine whispered. But, I’d advise we wait a little bit until we know more.”

My voice cracked. “But if she worsens, I swear, I’ll drag him home myself.”

I returned to the bedside, taking Kaia’s hand gently so I wouldn’t wake her.

“You two,” I muttered softly, shaking my head. “You’re going to make me lose

“Me too,” Justine chuckled. “She’s so stubborn, like the alpha”

my

mind.”

“Tell me about it, hah” I laughed a little.

I stayed with Kaia, watching her sleep, hoping she would feel better when she woke up.
