Chapter 95

–Elara–

I couldn’t sit still after I heard about Kaia.

I kept pacing around in my room. At this point, I couldn’t tell how many times I’ve gone round the place.

My palms were sweating, and I could hear my heart beating loud enough that I swore the walls could hear it.

If something is wrong with Kaia. Then, I’m afraid it has everything to do with the bonding spell.

I didn’t mean for it to come to this, she fainted from too much pain.

That could only mean one thing, the spell has a side effect and it’s affecting her badly.

That’s scary. Who knows what else will happen?

I was lost in thought when the door swung open and Luciien’s smug face locked with mine.

He looked so happy, and that annoyed me. Especially when I wasn’t in the mood to get taunted by him.

“Well, well, look at you,” he drawled, leaning against the doorframe. “Why are you pacing around like a hungry cheetah waiting for prey to walk by? Is something wrong?”

That annoying smirk was still plastered on his face. I wanted to slap him and erase it.

Instead, I swallowed it.

I glared at him. “Do you ever stop talking?”

He smirked. “Not when you look this entertaining.”

“Did you hear about Kaia?” I asked, trying to get serious.

“What about?” Lucien asked casually. “Has she disappeared from our lives? Great, isn’t that what you wanted all along”

“Would you be serious for a minute, Lucien? This isn’t funny?” I said, half-yelling.

Lucien raised his hand in a surrendering mode.

“Whoa, calm down, Elara. Tell me what’s going on with Kaia?”

I rolled my eyes and exhaled sharply. “Lucien, Kaia isn’t well and I think,” I bite my lips, unable to say it. I think the black magic I used on Kaia seems to be having a side effect.”

His smirk dropped.

“What?” He straightened instantly. “What kind of side effect?”

“I don’t know yet,” I admitted, my voice low. “But I heard she fainted from pain and the moonbane witch told me that there was a possibility of her experiencing immense pain”

“What?,” Lucien looked shocked. “Why is it happening now? The full moon was weeks ago!”

“I know,” I said. “The moonbane witch said it would take some time and I think Kaia is finally experiencing the pain” I mouthed, clenching my fingers.” Her body isn’t reacting well to the masked bond. I thought hiding their connection would be simple, but Kaia’s wolf is fighting it.”

Lucien dragged a hand through his hair, swearing under his breath.

“Dn it if they investigate-”

“If we’re not careful, someone might trace it. And if they do….”

“We’re dead,” he finished. “What if they find out what we did? We might try for treason

“They won’t,” I snapped, raising my voice slightly. “They can’t, no one here has the skills to trace the subtle dark magic I did.”

Lucien stared at me, jaw tight. “For how long?”

I exhaled. “At least a month. They won’t know the bond has been tampered with for a month.”

Lucien rubbed the back of his neck, pacing now too.

“So what, are we just going to sit and wait while she collapses? What if Theo starts digging?”

“He won’t,” I said, I could hear my voice break inwardly. “He doesn’t even know what’s happening.”

Lucien shot me a look. “And what if he does? You think he won’t tear the entire continent apart to get answers?”

I pressed my lips together because he was right.

“We need to calm down,” I murmured, trying to calm him down. “They won’t link anything to us. And once the bond is fully unmasked, the spell will break and Kaia won’t feel anything. We just need time.”

“Time?” Lucien asked, shaking his head. “Goddamn, we don’t fucking have time to wait around”

I thought about it for a second, and Lucien wasn’t wrong.

I breathed. “Fine, leave it to me. I’ll handle it.”

Lucien snorted. “Oh, right. Because the last time I left everything to you, you didn’t do a half-baked job, right?” His lips curled. “Theo still didn’t reject Kaia, which was the reason we masked the bond in the first place, it’s useless, don’t you think?”

I stiffened, humiliation crawling up my cheeks. Lucien is so annoying and good at passing the blame.

“That wasn’t my fault,” I muttered, looking away.

“Of course,” he mocked. “Nothing is ever your fault, wifey.”

I hated how my cheeks burned, how he always saw through me.

“Undo it,” Lucien said suddenly.

I blinked. “Sorry, what?”

“Undo the masking,” he repeated. “Or loosen it. If the bond isn’t suffocating her, the side effects stop. heals. And Theo won’t investigate anything.”

I stared at him.

He didn’t just ask me to undo the spell, did he?

The thought made ice crawl up my spine. It was risky, I couldn’t afford to risk anything going wrong.

“You didn’t just ask me to undo the spell, did you?” I asked in disbelief.

“I did,” Lucien puckered his face. “Undo the spell”

She

I caressed my temple, frustrated. “You’re not serious, undoing the spell means that if Kaia and Theo are fated, they will feel the pull”

“So?” Lucien asked, raising a brow. “It’s better to save our skin than worry about them getting together as fated. Don’t you care about your own life? If you don’t care about yourself, think of me, I still have to become Alpha. I can’t get convicted of treason, alright?”

I fell silent and didn’t know what to say but Lucien wasn’t wrong in the slightest.

“Going to do it? Or should we wait until the girl dies and Theo rips all our heads off?”

I inhaled shakily, my hands trembling for some reason.

“Fine,” I whispered. “I’ll undo it, I can’t have us persecuted before we had a chance to take what rightfully belongs to us”

A slow grin spread across his face. Then, Lucien touched my chin, lifting my face with a cocky half-smile.

“Good girl. See? Things go smoother when you listen to me.”

Annoyed, I slapped his hand away and stalked past him.

“Shut up,” I muttered, pushing past him. “Stop irritating me”

“I’m not trying to irritate you, wifey. I’m speaking sense into your thick skull”

“Whatever, but I’m doing this my way,” I snapped. “And next time? I want nothing to do with you, carry out your schemes by yourself”

“Fine, do whatever wouldn’t get our heads ripped off.” Lucien brushed past me, “I gotta go talk to Cara for a

bit”

When Lucien left, I felt my stomach sink with agony.

This wasn’t supposed to happen, I only wanted to break Kaia not put her life in danger.

If anything happens to Kaia, Theo would never forgive me.

He wouldn’t think twice before ending my life as well. It’s better to be a coward alive than die foolishly.

I shut the door behind Lucien and leaned against it, my chest tight.

When I looked down, my hands were trembling, which irritated me even more.

I wasn’t supposed to shake like a wet puppy, I should be in control of my emotions and the pack at large.

If something this little can shake me, how would I handle being the luna of Shadowclaw in the future?

I rushed to my wardrobe, pushing it out of the way.

It was big and heavy, so I struggled to push it away but I managed to get through.

I threw out a few trash bags, ferociously searching for something.

After a while, I found the tiny black velvet pouch.

My fingers slipped through a little hole as I opened it.

Inside, the enchanted thread, the one masking Kaia and Theo’s bond pulsed

The moonbane witch had given me Theo and Kaia’s sealed bond in an enchanted thread.

She told me I could untie it if I ever changed my mind. Initially, I didn’t want to take it but she insisted.

“Stupid girl,” I muttered under my breath, gritting my teeth, annoyed. “You weren’t supposed to break this fast. You act all high and mighty yet you couldn’t hold on for a month?”

I walked back to my bed, I took out the thread and unwrapped it.

When it came into contact with my hand, I felt a burning sensation pulsing through my veins.

It was hot and painful.

A spike of panic shot through me, what was the burning sensation for?

Was Kaia dying? No, I can’t let her die!

I panicked, my heart was beating ferociously against my chest.

I closed my eyes and started the reversion chat, which the moonbane witch taught me.

The thread burned hotter with every chant I uttered. It was resisting, clinging to what it had latched onto, the bond between them.

“Let go,” I whispered through clenched teeth. “Release the fucking bond and leave!”

Soon, the magic snapped like a whip, and the thread fell on the floor, torn and battered.

I picked it up and lit it on fire, erasing its very existence.

Kaia wouldn’t be dying anymore, she would be fine in no time.

“Good enough,” I breathed, pulling my hand back.

Sweat clung to my neck as I finished cleaning up my room after burning the thread.

I looked like a bitter witch when I looked in the mirror.

Lucien would enjoy mocking me if he saw me like this.

I forced myself to breathe, smoothing my hair back and straightening my dress.

“Everything is fine now, Lara” I closed my eyes, splashing water on my face. “Kaia is not dying and I will not get exposed”

After calming myself down, I walked out of the room, hoping I’d get the latest update on Kaia.

Theo will be back soon, and I need to be on my good behavior.

Nobody should suspect I had anything to do with this.

I gave myself a prep talk. “Let’s do this, I can do this”
