She picked up the call. On the other end, Cecilia’s voice came through loud and sharp. “Where the hell are you? The baby needs milk, you know that? Get your ass back here now!”
Her voice was so loud that it carried across the room. Everyone glanced at each other, and the atmosphere turned instantly uncomfortable.
Katrina hung up in a hurry, her face drained.
“Katrina…” someone started, trying to comfort her.
But she was already on her feet. “Sorry, something came up at home. I need to go.”
She’d come tonight to show everyone how well she was doing, but instead, she’d embarrassed herself again and again.
Nina walked in just in time to see Katrina fleeing in a panic.
Inside, people began quietly discussing Katrina’s situation at home.
Everyone knew Chase’s mother had a reputation–sharp–tongued, difficult, and not someone to cross. She’d treated Jensen badly before, too.
With a mother–in–law like that, what kind of life could Katrina expect?
Thinking about it, several people shook their heads.
Nina couldn’t help thinking of her past life.
What she had gone through back then, Katrina was now living through.
That was karma.
Early the next morning, Nina was leaving the Tann residence to catch her flight overseas.
As she stepped out the front door, she spotted Chase crouched off to the side in the distance.
He looked up at her, his face drawn and exhausted, his eyes filled with regret. It seemed like he hadn’t gone home at all the night before–like he’d spent the whole night wandering outside.
Nina frowned slightly. She was about to get into the car when Chase suddenly rushed over and grabbed her hand.

“Nina, I regret it. I never really loved Katrina. Can you forgive me?”
His eyes were intense, almost pleading, as if Nina were the love of his life.
Eight months ago, he had sworn he loved only Katrina. Now he was a different person.
Nina calmly pulled her wrist free. Security stepped in immediately, restraining Chase.

“Where did this bum come from? Look at yourself–you’ve got no business touching Ms. Tann!”
To them, Chase was nothing more than a pathetic mess.
Nina didn’t spare him a single glance as she got into the car.
Watching her leave without hesitation, Chase felt a sharp ache in his chest.
He regretted it.
Regretted not marrying Nina when he had the chance.
Everything Katrina had shown him before had been an act.
Lately, he couldn’t stop thinking about Nina.
If he had married her instead, would his life be different now?
Sam glanced at Nina in the back seat, where she was vigorously wiping her arm. He couldn’t help asking, “Ms. Tann, do you think Chase might actually be serious this time?”
“Serious? So what? He’s not worthy of me.”
Nina’s expression didn’t change.
Sam thought about it and nodded inwardly.
Nina was heading abroad to study now.
Meanwhile, the Mercer family had fallen apart. He’d heard Chase was crammed into a tiny fifty–square–meter apartment with his wife and mother, earning just over three thousand a month, barely scraping by.
Someone like that wasn’t fit to stand beside Ms. Tann.
Nina looked out at the wide, open sky.
